Kawakamiya Kasuitei in Gero: Which Bath and Room Should You Choose?

Kawakamiya Kasuitei has a 24-hour public bath, a private outdoor bath booked on arrival and upgraded rooms with tubs. Water arrangements vary by bath.

Kawakamiya Kasuitei keeps its public facilities relatively simple: a stone indoor bath, an outdoor bath and one private cypress rental bath. The distinction that matters is how each is supplied. The indoor public bath is listed as unheated, undiluted and non-circulating flow-through; the outdoor pool uses partial recirculation. Room tubs need separate checking, since the guest-room page lists their materials but does not consistently specify the water source.

Three baths, three different ways to use them

The granite indoor bath is the clearest choice for guests who care about flow-through water: the inn says it is not diluted, reheated or recirculated. Its listed bath temperature is around 41–42°C. The outdoor Kawara-no-yu bath uses the same Gero hot spring, but combines a steady supply of fresh water with partial circulation and filtration for hygiene.

The cypress private outdoor bath, called Tobinoyu, is for families or companions who want a shared session. It is available from 2:30 to 9pm for 40 minutes, with reservations made at check-in. It is free on many plans, though some charge extra. The inn confirms hot-spring water and lists a 41–42°C bath temperature; it does not publish the same full treatment details that it gives for the indoor bath. Do not assume its water is handled identically.

Both shared baths are listed as available around the clock. That makes a standard room a reasonable choice if you are happy using public baths and only need one private session together. Reserve Tobinoyu soon after arrival; it is not a bath time you can count on choosing at the last minute.

Room upgrades: more space and a tub, but check the water

Kawakamiya Kasuitei has 14 rooms. Japanese-style suites such as Kiku and Momo have cypress indoor tubs and stone outdoor baths. One booking listing identifies a Japanese-style suite’s private bath as hot-spring water, but the room descriptions do not say that every tub uses spring water. Ask about the exact room before paying more for an onsen bath.

Dinner and breakfast are served in private dining rooms, with chair seating and sunken-kotatsu seating listed. That gives the stay a quieter meal setting without making in-room dining part of the promise. The 14-room scale may appeal if you prefer a smaller property, though it is not an adults-only inn.

Arrival from Gero Station

JR Gero Station is about a 15-minute walk away or five minutes by taxi. The inn no longer runs its former shuttle. Free station pickup is by taxi from 2 to 6:30 p.m.; tell a waiting driver you are going to Kawakamiya Kasuitei. Pickup outside those hours is unconfirmed.

JR Gero Station

When comparing room-only rates, use the same dates, party size and cancellation terms. Check whether the room has an indoor or outdoor tub, whether a private-bath fee applies, and whether its water is confirmed as hot spring water.

The inn lists the spring at pH 9.1. The 55°C figure describes managed water supplied to local inns, not a temperature measured at Kawakamiya Kasuitei. Likewise, the regional flow of 2,300 litres per minute is a system-wide total, not this inn’s individual supply.

If you want a station-side alternative with a very short walk, see Mutsumikan. For help choosing between the station area and the river or onsen-street side, use Gero's stay-area guide.
