Kirishima Day-Use Baths: Garden Pools, Mud Pack and Two Springs

Compare four Kirishima day baths by admission, spring type, tattoo policies and the transport links between Maruo and Kirishima Shrine.

Kirishima Onsenkyo is a collection of hot-spring districts, not one walkable bathhouse strip. A day visit could mean a huge garden bath with several spring types, a small onsen with private outdoor-bath slots, a sulfur mud pack near Kirishima Shrine, or a ¥430 local bath in Maruo. Pick the experience first; the bus or taxi plan follows from it.

Kirishima Hotel is the big-bath choice

The hotel’s day-use ticket gives access to the sulfur-valley garden bath, which draws from 14 springs and offers four spring types. The source water is listed at 48–60°C, with a combined flow of about 14 million litres a day; these are source figures, not a promise about pool temperature. Admission includes a face towel, while bath towels are rented separately. The hotel explicitly prohibits tattoos, so a private bath elsewhere in the area should not be assumed to make its rules more flexible.

Part of the garden bath is a mixed-bathing zone. The hotel says swimwear is not permitted; women use a bath towel there. Its evening women-only period is for overnight guests and falls outside the day-use window, so check the layout and rules before deciding whether that bath suits your group.

There is one important weekly caveat. On Wednesdays, maintenance means day visitors can use only the Tono-yu and Hime-yu baths near the entrance; the main garden bath and outdoor bath are unavailable. If those large shared baths are the reason for going, choose another day. The operator also warns that busy days can bring an earlier cutoff.

Ryokojin Sanso separates its two spring types—and charges per person for private bathing

The public baths are open for reception from noon to 3 p.m. Adult admission is ¥600; children are ¥300. The indoor bath uses simple spring water and the outdoor bath sulfur spring water. Towels cost extra.

Day visitors can also request a 50-minute private outdoor bath between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. It costs ¥1,200 per adult and ¥600 per child, charged per person rather than per room. You cannot reserve this day-use slot by phone: ask at reception on arrival. The public baths are included after the private bath, subject to the facility’s rules and availability. Overnight guests have a different reservation arrangement, so do not assume their shuttle or booking terms apply to day visitors.

Sakura Sakura is a mud-pack visit near Kirishima Shrine

This is the most distinctive option if you are already visiting Kirishima Shrine. Its day bath includes the outdoor bath and the natural mud-pack experience: warm up in the spring, apply a thin layer of mud, let it dry for about five minutes, then rinse it away. Keep it away from your eyes. The mud is not a pool of thick slurry, and the facility asks visitors to use it sparingly.

Admission is ¥800 for adults and ¥350 for children aged four through elementary school. Day-use hours are 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; holidays are irregular, and the operator posts closures in its news section. Its private outdoor baths are not part of ordinary day admission and are described as lodging-guest use. For a step-by-step look at the visit, see the Sakura Sakura Onsen guide.

Kajiro-ga-yu is the budget stop in Maruo

Kajiro-ga-yu in Maruo has indoor and outdoor baths, a geothermal sauna, a cold bath and a footbath. Admission is ¥430. It opens 9 a.m.–8 p.m. and closes Thursdays.

Kajiro-ga-yu's spring is listed at 72°C. The recorded pH is 9.95 at the outlet and 7.0 in a laboratory sample; neither figure describes every bathing pool. The current visitor listing gives no tattoo rule, so call ahead if you need a definite answer.

Getting between them takes planning

The airport-to-Maruo bus is useful for the central Kirishima Onsenkyo area, but these four facilities are not all at the same stop. Sakura Sakura is on the Kirishima Shrine side; the official route describes a transfer at Maruo to Yokoyama-shita, then about a three-minute walk. Ryokojin Sanso sits uphill from Maruo, and its accommodation shuttle information should not be treated as a day-use service. Check the bus operator’s timetable and confirm any direct pickup with the property.

If you have only half a day, avoid crossing between Maruo and the shrine side for the sake of one extra bath. The Kirishima vs Ibusuki overnight comparison helps decide whether Kirishima belongs in the route at all.
