Shibi Onsen: Which Bath Is Open to Day Visitors?
Compare Shibi’s public bath, Kusunoki and Chidori-so by price and age rules. Shibiso is currently for overnight guests, not walk-in bathers.
Shibi Onsen is a small hot-spring settlement in Satsuma, Kagoshima, best known locally as “the God’s Bath” because its spring rises beneath the worship hall of Shibi Shrine. For a day visit, the practical choice is between the public bath, Kusunoki and Chidori-so. Shibiso has two natural springs, but it stopped accepting ordinary day visitors in January 2021; plan it as an overnight stay.

Start early at the public bath
The Shibi Public Bath charges visitors from outside the district ¥300 per adult; residents pay ¥100.
It opens year-round from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., with last admission at 8:30 p.m.
Next door, the Fureai rest hall costs ¥1,000 per person and opens 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Guests can rest there and re-enter the bath. The hall closes Tuesdays, New Year’s Day and December 31.
The public bath is about a soak, not a full-service spa. Pick it if you want the early opening or simply want to bathe in the spring associated with Shibi Shrine. The rest hall is a separate product; it is unnecessary for a short visit.
Pay more at Kusunoki if you will use the facilities
Kusunoki charges ¥1,000 for day use and is the most equipped option in this comparison. Its facilities include indoor and outdoor baths, a reclining bath, a sauna and a cold plunge, along with basic bathing amenities. The inn says its own spring is supplied at 100% source strength, without adding water or heating; it also uses that water in the showers. The outdoor bath receives water from a source about 300 metres away, through an underground pipe.
There are two important limits. Day bathing is for visitors aged 13 and over, so families with younger children should choose another bath. The published day-use window is noon to 9 p.m., with Wednesday listed as the weekly closure, but the inn posts additional closure notices. Check its current notice before setting out.
Kusunoki makes sense when sauna, the outdoor pool or clearly described water handling matter to you. For a simple soak, the public bath costs less.
Chidori-so is a small-inn alternative
Chidori-so accepts day visitors from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and lists a bathing fee from ¥300. The town marks Tuesday as its closing day and gives the inn’s phone number for current details. It is a more modest setting than Kusunoki, without that property’s published sauna and cold-plunge lineup. Choose it if you prefer a smaller inn bath but do not need a day-spa range of facilities.
The official town listing does not provide a current spring analysis or a complete water-treatment specification for Chidori-so. The shared regional name alone is not enough to assign it Kusunoki’s pH or source-flow claims.
Shibiso is an overnight stay, not a ¥300 walk-in bath
Old travel listings still show Shibiso as a ¥300 day bath. The inn’s current bathing page says ordinary day use has been suspended since January 2021, and Satsuma Town’s January 2025 accommodation listing also marks day bathing unavailable. Use those newer notices rather than the old county tourism entry when planning a 2026 visit.
Shibiso has two self-flowing springs at different temperatures. The inn classifies the water as a simple sulfur spring with pH 9.4, but does not publish the two temperatures in text. Its river-facing outdoor bath is for overnight guests of Shibiso and neighbouring Shibian; it may close in rain or snow.
Getting to Shibi Onsen
There is no railway station in the Shibi settlement. Kusunoki’s access information points visitors arriving without a car toward Miyanojo and then a taxi for the final leg; town information gives roughly 55 minutes by bus from Sendai Station to the Miyanojo area. Check the current bus and taxi arrangements before committing, since the low bath admission can be outweighed by a long return trip.
By car, the facilities are close enough to choose one without turning the visit into a circuit of every bath. The public bath suits a short, early stop; Kusunoki is the facilities choice; Chidori-so offers a smaller inn bath. Save Shibiso for a stay that can use its overnight-only baths.
