Nishimuraya Hotel Shogetsutei: Which Bath Is Worth Paying Extra For?

Nishimuraya Hotel Shogetsutei is a forest-side ryokan with full-size public baths, several room styles and a bookable private spa. The room upgrade and the private onsen are separate decisions: the open-air bath attached to a guest room uses heated tap water, while the shared baths and Forest Private Spa use Kinosaki’s natural spring.

If a private room bath is the priority, the open-air room may still suit you. If you want to bathe together in natural spring water, reserve the Forest Private Spa instead. And if you are happy with a gender-separated bath, the hotel’s main onsen is included with the stay. Three ways to bathe, with different costs and access

The room tub is not a lesser version of the Forest Private Spa; it serves a different purpose. It lets you bathe in your own space, but does not add a natural hot spring to the room. Do not pay an upgrade specifically for in-room onsen water—the hotel states that Kinosaki’s private in-room tubs use heated fresh water to protect the town’s spring resources.

Reserve the Forest Private Spa around its fixed start times

The Forest Private Spa combines a natural hot-spring outdoor bath, a lounge and a rock sauna. There are three themed rooms: Japanese-style Gingetsu, Balinese-style FU-RO and Chinese-style Rinsen. The price is ¥8,800 per room for 70 minutes for one to four people. A fifth or sixth guest adds ¥1,100 per person; six is the maximum. Only guests staying at Shogetsutei or Nishimuraya Honkan may book, and availability is limited.

If the private bath is central to your booking, ask about availability when you make the room reservation. The hotel asks guests to inquire through its contact form; choosing a preferred room does not guarantee it if that slot has already been taken. Check the meal plan’s serving arrangements before choosing an early-evening spa time, and confirm the end time of the 70-minute session.

The rock sauna has a two-person limit at one time, even though the spa room can hold up to six. The hotel does not provide child-sized sauna clothing. That makes the private outdoor bath and lounge the shared part of a family session; the whole group cannot use the sauna together.

The main bath is the easy fallback

Shogetsutei’s gender-separated public baths use natural hot-spring water and are included for overnight guests. Each side has indoor and outdoor pools, a cold bath and a dry sauna. Published hours are 5:30–10:00 a.m. and noon–12:30 a.m. A refreshment lounge serves a complimentary cold drink after bathing.

This is the simplest choice if private bathing is not essential. There is no need to coordinate a 70-minute slot, and you can still soak in the local spring at the hotel. The trade-off is the usual one for a public bath: men and women bathe separately, and guests use the baths without swimsuits. Kinosaki’s outdoor bathhouses offer another option when you want to go into town; their individual schedules and closures vary.

The shuttle makes the distance manageable—but not spontaneous

Shogetsutei is about a 25–30-minute walk from Kinosaki Onsen Station, toward the forest end of town. A free association shuttle meets arriving trains between 12:51 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.; seats are limited, and the hotel asks guests to share their arrival time in advance. This is the practical way to arrive with luggage. After 6 p.m., do not assume that the arrival shuttle will still be running.

The hotel runs its own shuttle between the property and the station, close to the central public-bath area. Published afternoon departures are every half hour from 3 to 6 p.m.; evening departures are listed from 8 to 10 p.m. but may vary.

Morning trips run one way from 8:30 a.m. through noon, and the bus does not depart if nobody needs it. Ask the front desk about service on your date, especially if you want to return late from town or catch a specific train.

If the arrival shuttle timing does not fit, the Kinosaki Onsen Tourism Center across from the station accepts luggage from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for ¥200 per item and transfers it to the hotel, according to Shogetsutei’s access page. That leaves you free to walk around town before check-in. Drivers should note the hotel’s winter warning: snow tires are required from December through March.
