How to Get to Noboribetsu Onsen from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport
Compare direct buses with JR and a local bus to Noboribetsu Onsen. Check reservations, luggage transfers, the final uphill 8 km and return times.
The detail that catches people out is the last leg. JR Noboribetsu Station is about 8 km from the resort, down the hill; arriving by train does not mean you have reached your hotel. Choose a direct coach if its fixed departure suits your day and you want to keep bags with you. The train gives you more departure combinations, but you still need to connect to a local bus or taxi after reaching Noboribetsu Station.
Start with the transfer, not the advertised journey time

The resort is spread along a slope. Reaching the bus terminal does not necessarily mean a level walk to your hotel, especially if you are staying toward Jigokudani or the upper end of town. Before booking a route, check the closest stop to your accommodation and what the last stretch looks like with your luggage.
From Sapporo: a direct afternoon coach or rail with more options
Dōnan Bus lists its regular Express Onsen-go journey from Sapporo at about 1 hour 50 minutes, with adult fares from ¥2,800 to ¥3,800. The published regular outbound run leaves Sapporo Station at 1:40 p.m. and stops in the resort, including near the footbath entrance. Seats are reserved; online reservations close two hours before departure. It lines up neatly with an afternoon check-in, but it is not a flexible morning service or a good fit if you need several possible return times.
By rail, take a train from Sapporo to Noboribetsu Station, then Dōnan Bus’s local service uphill. The bus ride takes about 27 minutes and costs ¥450 one way for an adult. You will handle your bags again, but there are more train departures to choose from. Search JR Hokkaido for your actual travel date and match the train to the local bus rather than relying on an old printed timetable.
For a day trip from Sapporo, the train-and-bus combination is usually easier to shape around an early start and a later return. The current regular direct coach leaves in the afternoon, making it more useful for an overnight stay.
From New Chitose Airport: a limited direct bus or two train legs
Dōnan Bus’s Express Noboribetsu Onsen Airport-go runs from New Chitose Airport to the resort. The listed trip takes about 1 hour 15 minutes; adult one-way fares are ¥1,900–¥2,400, and seats are reserved.
Departures are limited. Check that the bus runs on your date and serves your stop in the direction you need. Online reservations close two hours before departure. Road and weather delays are possible, so leave a buffer before a flight.
By rail, take an Airport train to Minami-Chitose, change for Noboribetsu Station, then continue uphill on the local bus. This means more luggage handling, but offers another set of departure times if the airport coach does not line up with your landing. Check each segment separately, especially the last bus if you arrive in the evening.
An afternoon arrival can work well for the direct coach if the timetable matches. For an early landing, rail may let you start the visit sooner; for a late or uncertain landing, do not assume you will make a reserved bus. Also check your hotel’s dinner and check-in cutoffs before choosing a late connection.
The last 8 km: plan the trip up from Noboribetsu Station
JR Noboribetsu Station is below the hot-spring district. From there, the local bus takes about 27 minutes to Noboribetsu Onsen. A taxi covers the same uphill leg, but confirm availability and the current fare locally rather than building an unverified price into your budget.
Before arriving, confirm four things: the next bus to the resort; whether your hotel is near the bus terminal or farther uphill; the hotel’s dinner and check-in deadline if you are arriving late; and a local bus that can connect with your chosen train on the return. Check the return before you set out
Direct buses are convenient only when the departure works in both directions. The Sapporo service is particularly suited to an afternoon outbound trip and a morning return. Airport services also have limited choices. If you have an early flight, compare the bus arrival time with the airline’s check-in requirements and allow for road delays; do not treat the published drive time as a guaranteed connection.
With JR, the train is only half of the return journey. First decide when you need to leave the resort, then confirm a local bus that reaches Noboribetsu Station with time to spare. In winter, both road and rail travel can be disrupted. Keep a workable alternative rather than relying on one final connection.
Which route fits your day?
Arriving at New Chitose in the afternoon with large bags: check the airport coach first. If its departure fits, it avoids changing trains and hauling luggage between platforms.
Landing early or unsure how long arrival formalities will take: rail is easier to rearrange if the coach timetable does not fit. Check the last local bus before committing to an evening train.
Travelling from Sapporo for one night: the 1:40 p.m. direct bus suits a straightforward afternoon check-in. If you want to leave early, return late or make a day trip, rail usually gives you more flexibility.
Travelling with an older relative, a young child or two large suitcases: count luggage transfers and the slope at the hotel end. Fewer changes may matter more than a small difference in the listed journey time.
For a day visit, plan both layers of the return: Noboribetsu Onsen to JR Noboribetsu Station, then the onward train to Sapporo or New Chitose.
