JOY Taisho: A Natural Hot Spring in Osaka’s Taisho Ward
JOY Taisho in Osaka’s Taisho Ward uses undiluted spring water. Check the ¥600 entry fee, bus access to Hirao, parking and the latest cold-bath notice.
The facility’s published data lists a spring depth of 1,190 metres, a source temperature of 48.1°C and a flow rate of 420 litres per minute. JOY Taisho describes its water as 100% natural spring water, used without heating or dilution. These are source figures; 48.1°C is not a claim about the temperature of every bath.
The basic adult sento fare in Osaka is currently ¥600. JOY Taisho lists a sauna package at ¥850, school-age children at ¥200 and younger children at ¥100. Shampoo and bath products are not provided free of charge, so bring your own or budget for the small items and towel rentals sold at the facility.
The current shop list charges ¥60 each for shampoo, conditioner, soap and a small-towel rental. A bath-towel rental is ¥150.
Older pages still show the previous ¥730 sauna package and ¥50 toiletries; the facility’s current price list is the one to use. The ¥850 package does not cover wash products or towel rentals.
What the spring information does—and does not—tell you
JOY Taisho publishes its source temperature and output alongside a direct statement that it uses undiluted, unheated source water. That supports calling it a natural hot-spring bath, rather than inferring anything from the word onsen in its name. It does not establish that every tub has a fixed temperature of 48.1°C, and the published 420 L/min is a reported flow rate, not a measure of how much water each bath uses throughout the day.
The layout is a local bathhouse, not an all-day spa. A visit is generally limited to two hours. Men’s and women’s baths change floors by date: men use the second floor on even-numbered dates and the first floor on odd-numbered dates; women use the reverse. Check before you go if you are looking for a particular side’s setup.
The current cold-bath notice is dated August 16, 2026 and still reports an equipment failure; no newer repair confirmation appeared on the facility page by September 27. The rest of the bathhouse remains open. Families should note that children must be accompanied by an adult of the same sex, and the facility does not allow children—including junior-high-school students—into the sauna when visiting with a guardian.
Useful caveats for sauna users and families
The facility’s current notice still describes an equipment issue with the cold bath, with an August 16 status update and no newer repair notice on that page as of September 27, 2026. This is not a closure notice for the whole bathhouse. If the cold plunge is part of your sauna plan, call ahead rather than assuming it has been restored because an older directory lists it.
JOY Taisho does not provide free shampoo or body wash; the official bathhouse listing gives prices for basic supplies and towel hire. Its posted rules also say children cannot bathe alone and must be accompanied by an adult of the same sex. Children visiting with a guardian are not allowed to use the sauna. Families should factor that in before buying the sauna package.
Getting to Hirao
The address is 4-23-6 Hirao, Taisho Ward. JOY Taisho is not beside JR or Osaka Metro Taisho Station, so plan to connect by local bus into the Hirao neighbourhood rather than expecting a walk from the rail station. The bathhouse lists five free parking spaces. That is useful if you are already exploring southern Taisho Ward, but five spaces can fill.
Current hours are 2 p.m.–10 p.m.; Saturday is the weekly closing day. The facility gives 9 p.m. as the last reception time. The ward office and bathhouse association list the same address and closing schedule. The Osaka standard adult fare is ¥600; check the facility’s own page for the current sauna package and any equipment notice.
For other local bathhouses, see the Osaka sento guide. If a large day-use spring complex is closer to your route, compare the options in the Osaka day-onsen guide.
The guide’s editorial snapshot scores comfort at 90/100 and value at 100, with access at 60; these are planning judgments, not official inspection results. The source data and undiluted spring are the real reason to choose JOY Taisho, but the Hirao bus connection, two-hour visit limit and five-space car park are part of the same decision. If Sunday morning is the priority, Taisho-yu opens at 6 a.m.; for an earlier ordinary-day opening and five parking spaces, Tsurumachi-yu opens at 12:30 p.m.
