A Day Trip to Shimoda Onsen: Town Walk, Lunch and One Good Soak

Shimoda’s baths are spread between town, the coast and inland hot-spring areas. A day trip goes more smoothly when you choose the bath first, then build the rest of the route around it. Trying to fit several baths into one afternoon usually means spending more time in transit than in the water.

A flexible town-based route

1. Arrive at Izukyu-Shimoda Station and leave luggage if you have arranged storage.
2. Walk the port area or the historic district before lunch; keep this to one main town stop.
3. Choose a town-side day-use bath whose hours work for your date.
4. Leave time to change, rest and get back to the station before your train.

The Shimoda City Tourism Association lists day-use facilities across the city. Hours and admission vary, and the association notes that some places may turn visitors away when busy. If you expect to arrive after 5 pm, confirm with the bath first. Its page is a directory; each facility sets its own operating conditions.

For a full day, a workable town version is to reach the station around 9 am, sort your bags and return train, walk the port or one stretch of the historic district from about 9:30, then stop for lunch before heading to the bath. Allow roughly 90 minutes at the facility for bathing, changing and a rest; keep the next hour flexible for a footbath, coffee or a nearby town stop. These are planning blocks, not train times. If you only have two or three hours in the afternoon, keep the main bath and the return connection and drop the extra sightseeing.

Want a sea-view bath?

Shimoda Prince Hotel is at Shirahama, not beside the station. Its public day-use bath looks out toward the Pacific, but it runs on a seasonal calendar: in 2026, public day use is unavailable July 1–August 31, and the 2026–27 calendar also lists a year-end closure. Regular day-use hours are 2–6 pm, with a 3 pm start on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Check the current bath calendar before planning around it.

If your date works, decide how you will get to Shirahama and back before you leave town. Do not assume the hotel’s reserved shuttle accepts bath-only visitors; its published shuttle terms are tied to hotel bookings. A route bus or taxi may be needed, and the return should be planned before the soak.

Keep the timing honest

There is no single timetable that works for every bath. Allow for the train you are taking, the facility’s final entry time, local transport, lunch and time after bathing to get changed. If the schedule is tight, cut the extra sightseeing stop instead of squeezing the bath or the return connection.

In summer, beach time adds a shower and changing stop; take a break before bathing. On wet or windy days, the town route is easier to adjust than a coast-heavy plan. Families should check each bath’s child and mixed-bathing rules in advance.

There is no useful all-in budget until you choose a facility: city bath admission, the hotel’s seasonal day ticket, bus fare and lunch are separate costs. For two adults, add the actual entry fees and transport for the chosen route rather than applying one Shimoda-wide estimate. If every day-use window conflicts with your train, staying overnight gives you the evening and morning bathing periods that a day ticket does not.
