Zao in November: Check the Open-Air Bath Before Heading Out

Zao’s Great Open-Air Bath usually closes in late November, depending on snow. Check before walking up; Kamiyu, Shimoyu and Kawarayu operate year-round.

Checked: September 27, 2026 The first snow does not automatically mean the Zao Onsen Great Open-Air Bath is closed. Its usual winter break begins in late November, and the actual date can shift with snow and site conditions. Check the operator’s current notice before walking up; a seasonal timetable is not a promise that the bath will be open on your visit. The 2026 four-facility day ticket is valid only through October 31, so do not include it in a November budget.

If it is operating and the path is clear, the riverside setting is the point: the baths sit outdoors beside a stream. If the site has announced its winter closure, or the approach is icy enough to make the walk uncomfortable, use one of the three public baths in town instead.

What remains available when the outdoor site closes

Zao’s Kamiyu, Shimoyu and Kawarayu public baths are listed as year-round facilities. Their usual hours are 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Admission is ¥300 for adults and ¥100 for children; bring small cash and check the local notice for any temporary change.

They are compact communal baths rather than full-service spas. Plan to wash at your accommodation if you need a shower, amenities or a place to linger.

Snow affects the approach as much as the bath itself. Without a car, fresh snow or an icy path can turn the walk to the outdoor bath into a serious part of the trip. Use a town bath instead if the route is slippery, the outdoor site is closed, or you want to stay near the bus terminal. Each bath sets its own tattoo rules, so check with the facility you choose.

The open-air bath has a different appeal and a different limitation. The September 5, 2026 operator notice listed admission at ¥850 for adults and ¥400 for children.

Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Treat the quoted rates as posted rates, not a guarantee for a later visit.

It is a seasonal site, with no indoor fallback if weather or winter closure rules it out. Posted hours vary by weekday and weekend, so confirm the latest opening notice before setting off.

A useful November decision

Go to the open-air bath when the operator lists it as open and the path is safe underfoot. Switch to a town bath if the site is closed, if fresh snow or ice makes the uphill walk a poor fit, or if you would rather have a quick soak near your lodging. The town baths are not interchangeable with the larger seasonal site, but they keep a bath option available through winter.

If your concern is footwear after the first snow, the November ice-and-footwear guide covers the higher trails separately.

The 2026 day-use pass for four local baths expires on October 31, so it should not be part of a November budget. Check each facility’s own admission terms instead.

The short version: verify the open-air bath’s operating status on the day. If it has closed for winter, the public baths in town remain the year-round option.
