Sakura River Side Stay in Gero: Fresh-Filled Private Baths and Hida River Views

Rooms face the Hida River, but private hot-spring baths are separately booked; standard rooms have no private onsen. Many plans include one 60-minute session.

Sakura River Side Stay is easy to misunderstand if you see “private onsen” and assume it comes with every room. The guest rooms face the Hida River, but the private bath is a separate, bookable room. Many current plans include one 60-minute session per room; the exact plan matters, and guests choose a time after check-in.

What the private bath includes

The inn describes the private bath as a “pure fresh-source” bath: guests run the spring water into the tub themselves, then mix it with a wooden paddle until it reaches a comfortable temperature. The tub is emptied after each group. This is different from arriving at a pre-filled bath, and the water can be hot, so allow time to adjust it before bathing.

Several current breakfast, dinner and early-booking plans include one 60-minute private-bath session per room for the stay. It is not 60 minutes per guest, and the time is selected at check-in, so a popular evening slot is not guaranteed. Some plans may charge separately. Look for the private-bath inclusion in the exact plan details before paying.

The gender-separated public bath was renovated in December 2022. The inn says it uses undiluted, source-fed flow-through water; a sloped stone surface helps cool the hot spring.

The bath is small and may close for cleaning or maintenance. During a closure, guests can use the private bath during its operating hours. Confirm that the public bath will be open if it is important to your stay.

The stated spring type is alkaline simple hot spring. The public information does not provide a full water-management analysis, so “flow-through” and “not diluted” should not be extended to claims about every possible treatment process.

Room choice, views and the dormitory exception

All guest rooms face the Hida River. The room types include double, twin, wide twin, Hollywood twin, triple and Japanese-style rooms. Capacity varies by room, from one or two guests in some rooms to as many as four to seven in selected Japanese-style rooms. Every room is non-smoking. A river-facing label does not guarantee the same floor, window angle or unobstructed fireworks view, so check the exact room name if the outlook is important.

Dormitory beds are a different product: dormitory guests cannot use either the public bath or the private bath, and have access only to the dedicated shower room. The lowest bed rate should not be compared with a standard room that includes hot-spring access.

Food and arrival times are part of the decision

This is not a conventional kaiseki-focused ryokan. The restaurant leans toward German-style cooking, including ribs, Hida beef and German beer. Breakfast is Western or European in style, so guests looking for a sequence of traditional Japanese courses may prefer another inn.

Dinner plans require check-in before 6 p.m. Arrivals after 8 p.m. incur an additional charge, and check-in is not possible after 10 p.m. Plan your train around those limits.

The station is about an eight- to nine-minute walk away; the hot-spring streets are roughly two minutes away. Free parking is listed for around 15 cars on a first-come basis. A lift is available, but confirm the route to your room, bath and dining space if accessibility matters.

Children’s rates depend on age, meals and bedding, so compare those selections on the room plan. Test the private bath temperature before a young child enters. If a guest has a tattoo, call Sakura River Side Stay about access to both the in-room and reservable baths.

The Gero accommodation guide compares this inn with properties where the private bath is actually inside selected or all guest rooms, including Sasara and other town options in the Gero ryokan guide.
