Staying at Tokinoyu Setsugetsuka: Gora Access and How the Baths Work

Tokinoyu Setsugetsuka is an easy Hakone base if you are travelling by train: the ryokan is about a one-minute walk from Gora Station, where the mountain railway meets the cable car for Sounzan. The bath setup needs a closer look, though. Every guest room has a private hinoki tub, but the hotel says plainly that it is not a hot spring. For natural spring water, use the public baths or one of the three private outdoor baths.

That makes Setsugetsuka a good fit for guests who value an effortless station transfer and want several ways to bathe. It is less suited to someone whose non-negotiable is onsen water in their own room.

Arriving in Gora with bags

The hotel sits just across from Gora Station. From Hakone-Yumoto, the Hakone Tozan Railway takes about 40 minutes up to Gora; from Shinjuku, the hotel lists the Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto at about 1 hour 25 minutes, followed by that mountain-railway leg. You can leave your luggage at the hotel before check-in, although room access begins at 3 p.m. Checkout is 11 a.m. The station also has paid luggage storage if you need to keep moving before heading to the ryokan.

Gora works well for a no-car itinerary because you can reach the cable-car platform from the station and continue toward Sounzan and the ropeway. Buses also leave Gora for other parts of Hakone. Check the current station information and service links on Hakone Navi before setting out; the one-minute hotel walk does not remove the need to check transfers or operating status for the rest of the route. Which bath has spring water?

It is easy to read “open-air bath in every room” as “private onsen in every room.” That is not what the hotel offers. The room’s hinoki tub is for a private soak with heated water, not spring water. It is convenient after sightseeing or before bed, but it should not be the reason you book if you specifically want a natural hot spring without leaving your room.

The hotel’s natural water is in its shared bathing areas. The main bath has indoor and outdoor pools, and the property draws from two named sources: Gora Onsen and Owakudani-Gora Onsen. The hotel describes these baths as free-flowing, while noting that water may be heated or added to adjust the temperature. There is also Yuno-ma, a separate artificial carbonated bath; it should not be counted as another natural spring.

Room category is mainly about space and sleeping arrangements, not access to a better bath. The 36 m² Japanese-Western room accommodates two or three, while the 45 m² option sleeps up to four. For the extra guest or guests, futons are self-service on the tatami area. The 19 m² double is a tighter choice for one or two; the 36 m² Universal Twin is also for two. If everyone expects a separate bed, check the exact room description before comparing prices.

Using the three private outdoor baths

The three private baths—Kangetsu, Manten and Hanagasumi—are included in the stay and use Owakudani-Gora spring water. They are first come, first served: check the indicator light by the entrance, and go in when it shows a bath is free. The hotel asks guests to keep a visit to around 40 minutes. They are open from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., then again from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.

There is no shower in the private-bath area, so wash first in your room or the public bath. Stairs are part of the route, and the hotel says wheelchair users cannot reach these baths; guests with difficulty walking may also find the route hard. For a tattooed guest, Kyoritsu Resort’s current rule excludes tattoos from the public bath regardless of size and directs guests to a room bath or private bath. At Setsugetsuka, that means the private baths are the natural-water option.

Because you cannot reserve a time, treat a private bath as an opportunity rather than a scheduled appointment. Dinner also has two sittings, usually starting at 5:15 p.m. and around 7:45 p.m.; the hotel says times can vary by date. Take a look after check-in, then try again later or the next morning instead of waiting at the entrance for one specific bath.

What the location and bath setup add up to

Setsugetsuka makes the most sense when being beside Gora Station will simplify a short Hakone stay, and you are happy to use the shared or first-come private baths for spring water. The trade-off is clear: your own bath offers privacy at any hour, but not natural spring water; the private outdoor baths provide both privacy and spring water, but have stairs and no advance booking.
