Where to Stay in Hakone: Choose Your Base Around the Next Morning

Hakone is a collection of valleys and lakeside areas linked by rail, cable car, ropeway, bus and boat. A hotel that looks central on a map can still leave you retracing a steep route or waiting for a bus the next morning. Pick the area around the first substantial trip you want to make after checkout; then compare rooms and baths.

Hakone-Yumoto keeps the edges of the trip simple

Yumoto is the gateway for the Odakyu Romancecar and the Hakone Tozan Railway. The Romancecar runs directly from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in as little as 75 minutes. The station is also a hub for buses towards Gora, Sengokuhara, Togendai and the Lake Ashi ports, and it has luggage storage and the Hakone Carry Service.

That makes Yumoto a sensible first or last night if your train times are fixed, you have large bags, or your group would rather settle in before climbing farther into the mountains. It is less efficient for an early start at Owakudani or the lake: you will ride back through parts of the same network that you used to reach the hotel. A one-night stay with a full mountain circuit may be better placed farther in, provided your luggage plan works.

Gora is the practical launch point for Sounzan and Owakudani

The Hakone Tozan Railway ends at Gora, where the cable car continues uphill to Sounzan and the ropeway proceeds toward Owakudani and Togendai. Staying in or near Gora trims the approach to that route, which is useful when the ropeway is a morning priority. Its operating hours vary by season, and wind, inspection work or other operating conditions can stop it, so an overnight location cannot remove service risk.

The trade-off is the ride back down to Yumoto or Odawara on departure day. Gora also covers a range of slopes and hotel access arrangements; check whether the property is beside the station, reachable by cable car, or dependent on a shuttle. Miyanoshita and Kowakudani split the difference

These middle-valley areas work for a stay that mixes a museum, a walk and time at the inn without trying to finish the entire Hakone loop. They can break up the journey between Yumoto and Gora, but “near Kowakudani” or “in Miyanoshita” does not tell you how much walking the final approach involves. Some properties need a bus ride or a shuttle, and the terrain is not uniformly flat.

Use the hotel’s named station or bus stop, then check the actual path from that point. A short distance on a map may still involve a slope, stairs or a road with little room for rolling luggage. This base makes the most sense when the property itself is a substantial part of the stay, rather than a stop picked only to split transport in half.

Sengokuhara is quieter and more spread out

Sengokuhara is a better fit for museums, the highland scenery and a slower stay than for spontaneous evenings around a station district. Buses connect the area with Yumoto, Gora and Togendai, but hotels and attractions are dispersed. Confirm the stop name, the walking route from it, and the last useful bus after dinner or an evening bath.

Without a car, Sengokuhara is workable when the accommodation is close to a bus stop and your plans follow the bus corridor. It becomes awkward when a property sits up a slope or your evening depends on finding a taxi. If dinner is included, having the meal at the hotel can remove one late cross-area journey; if not, check nearby restaurants and return options before booking.

Stay by Lake Ashi when the lake is part of the evening

Motohakone, Hakone-machi and Togendai serve different sides of Lake Ashi. A lake-area stay makes a cruise, Hakone Shrine or an early lakeside walk easier to enjoy without returning to Yumoto at the end of the day. Togendai is also a transfer point for the ropeway, cruise and buses, while Motohakone and Hakone-machi have their own port and bus connections.

This is the least convenient choice if your next morning begins with a train from Yumoto or Odawara. Work backwards from that departure and allow time for a bus, road traffic and transfers; the boat is not a substitute for every road connection. A reserved Ashinoko Liner may help on selected dates, but its operating days and booking rules are limited. Do not make a fixed train connection depend on an unconfirmed seat.

A one-night decision in four routes

• Arrive late and leave toward Tokyo the next day: stay in Yumoto, where the rail connection is closest.
• Start at Owakudani and the ropeway: Gora keeps the morning approach short, if the cable car and ropeway are operating.
• Spend the day around the lake and shrine: choose the port area that matches your next stop, then protect time for the return journey.
• Focus on museums or a quieter inn stay: compare Miyanoshita, Kowakudani or Sengokuhara property by property, not only by area name.

Car-free travel is feasible across Hakone’s main network, but it takes timetable planning. The extra distance between zones is the main friction: missing a bus can cost far more time than a missed train in a city.
