Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu vs Hakone Kowakien Hotel: Private Room Onsen or a Family Resort?
Both hotels include Yunessun and Mori no Yu access; Ten-yu has a private spring bath in every room, while Kowakien has public and private baths.

Both give overnight guests access to Yunessun and Motoyu Mori no Yu during their stay. The clearest reason to pay for Ten-yu is the private open-air hot-spring bath already included in every room. Choose Hakone Kowakien Hotel when shared facilities, family support and the option to reserve a separate private bath matter more.
The bath is the real room upgrade
Ten-yu’s 150 rooms all have private outdoor baths supplied with Kowakudani spring water. You can use the bath in your room without booking a time or paying a separate bathing fee. The hotel also has two public baths on different floors, with gender assignments that switch.
Hakone Kowakien Hotel takes a more conventional guest-room approach, then puts more of the bathing choice in shared facilities. Its panoramic bath is on the top floor. There are also seven private baths, one of them accessible, which can be reserved after check-in through the QR code shown on the in-room TV. The current listed price is ¥2,500 for 60 minutes, paid in advance by credit card; guests cannot select which tub they receive.

With children, the private bath changes the logistics
At Ten-yu, children who are not toilet-trained may not use the public-bath tubs, but the hotel directs families to the washing area or the private hot-spring bath in their room. That avoids having to book a separate slot for the main soak.
Hakone Kowakien Hotel’s official bath information says diapered children are not allowed in the main public baths, but there is no such restriction in the private baths. It also explicitly allows guests with tattoos to use the private baths. The seven rooms include one universal-design option. Reservations open after check-in, so this is a useful choice, but it is not the same as having a private tub available in your room whenever you want.
The hotel’s Welcome Baby information also details family rooms and baby amenities. If those practical supports matter more than a room spring, the hotel may be the easier fit.
Yunessun is a shared advantage—with different dates to check
Hakone Kowakien Hotel describes complimentary access to Yunessun and Mori no Yu during a guest’s stay, including visits before check-in and after checkout. Hours vary seasonally. The hotel, Yunessun and Mori no Yu are scheduled to close for maintenance from December 8 through 10, 2026; guests staying December 7 cannot use Yunessun on December 8. Check the official closure notice if your dates are near that window.
Ten-yu’s current FAQ lists complimentary access to the swimsuit area at Yunessun and Mori no Yu through December 31, 2026. It says guests may enter on both the arrival and departure days, including after checkout; it also lists specific closure dates. Because this is a date-limited benefit, confirm it if your stay falls after 2026 or overlaps a closure.
So don’t book Ten-yu on the assumption that the water park is exclusive to its guests. Both properties have access arrangements; the in-room hot-spring bath is the stronger difference.
Which room should you price first?
Start with Ten-yu if you expect to soak privately several times or would rather not schedule a bath around a reservation. Start with Hakone Kowakien Hotel if you want to spend much of the day at Yunessun, need its family room options, or are comfortable sharing the room bath decision with a booked one-hour slot.
Both properties are at 1297 Ninotaira, next to Yunessun and Mori no Yu. Compare identical dates, guest count, meals and cancellation rules, then add the private-bath cost if you would use it at the hotel. A starting room rate alone can hide a meaningful difference in what is included.
