Hakone Yuyado Zen: Room Baths, Views, Meals and Access
See what every Hakone Yuyado Zen room includes, how the view categories differ, what the official spring details say, and how to arrange the last-mile shuttle.
Hakone Yuyado Zen has ten rooms, and all ten include a semi-open-air bath supplied with hot-spring water on a flow-through basis. The choice is mainly about room layout and outlook: Fuji/Outer Rim rooms can catch a distant mountain view on clear days, while the forest and garden rooms keep the same in-room bathing feature without relying on that view. One detail needs confirmation before booking: the hotel’s current room page uses both “Gora Onsen” and “Owakudani Onsen” for the room water in different sections.
Every room has a bath; the view and layout change
The current room list totals ten rooms across six categories. Each includes a semi-open-air bath. The Fuji/Outer Rim categories are the only ones described as having a chance of a Mt. Fuji view, and the hotel qualifies that view as weather-dependent.
| Room category | Rooms and capacity | Layout to know |
|---|---|---|
| Garden-side Twin | 1 room; 2 guests | Added in 2024; twin beds and a balcony facing the garden and surrounding mountains |
| Fuji/Outer Rim Japanese-Western room | 2 rooms; 2–4 guests | Twin beds, tatami area and semi-open-air bath |
| Fuji/Outer Rim Western Twin | 2 rooms; 2 guests | Sofa-and-balcony or daybed arrangement; the specific subtype cannot be requested |
| Forest-side Japanese-Western room | 2 rooms; 2–4 guests | Twin beds, tatami area and semi-open-air bath |
| Forest-side Western Twin | 2 rooms; 2 guests | Twin beds and a sofa bed |
| Forest-side Double | 1 room; 1–2 guests | King bed; the hotel lists this as its lowest-priced category |
The Japanese-Western layouts make more sense for three or four people, or for a couple who will use the tatami area between soaks. For two guests who mainly want the room bath, a forest-side Twin or Double keeps the decision away from the weather. The garden Twin is a separate option if a newer room and a close garden view matter more than the chance of seeing Fuji.
Choose a Fuji-facing room only if you would still be content with its layout and outlook on a cloudy day. The hotel says some rooms in that category can see Fuji when the air is clear; it does not guarantee the mountain will be visible throughout your stay. In the Fuji-side Western Twin category, you cannot choose between the sofa-and-balcony and daybed subtype, so do not book based on one particular room photograph.
What the hotel says about the spring water
Every guest room has a semi-open-air bath described as flow-through. The room introduction calls the water “Gora Onsen,” while the detailed spring field names Owakudani Onsen and classifies it as an acidic calcium-chloride-sulfate spring.
The property’s published source labels conflict, so the room supply’s spring name is unconfirmed. Ask the hotel if the specific source or classification matters to your booking.
The property’s facility list centers bathing around the guest-room tubs; it does not list a separate shared public bath or bookable family bath. That suits guests who want to bathe privately without fitting their soak around a communal bath schedule. It is a poor match if a large public bath, sauna or several communal pools are essential parts of the stay.
The hotel is built around a quiet evening in
Dinner and breakfast are served in private dining rooms. The current facility page lists dinner from 6 p.m. and breakfast from 8:30 a.m.; the meal page describes a Japanese course using Hakone Seiroku Wagyu, seafood from Sagami and Suruga bays, and seasonal vegetables. The photos are examples rather than a promise of the exact dishes for your date. Meal inclusion depends on the plan, so compare room-only, breakfast and dinner-included rates with the same cancellation terms.
Check-in starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is by 11 a.m. The hotel’s dining time makes a late arrival worth confirming in advance. Its lounge and Café & Bar SORA are on the first floor, but the café is not a substitute for a missed dinner service.
The last three minutes still need arranging
Zen is in Sengokuhara, not beside a railway station. For a no-car arrival, the hotel offers a free pickup from Hakone Tozan Bus’s Palace Hotel-mae stop, the Hakone Ropeway’s Ubako Station, or the Izu Hakone Bus stop named Ubako. Call the inn after reaching one of those points; the hotel lists the transfer as about three minutes. This is a last-mile pickup, not a direct shuttle from Hakone-Yumoto or Odawara, so check bus and ropeway connections before choosing your arrival time.
The hotel’s access page currently flags some transport restrictions related to Hakone’s volcanic activity and links to Hakone Town’s traffic information. Check the live operator notices and road conditions for your travel date, especially if the ropeway is part of the route. Drivers can use the hotel’s free parking, listed for 12 cars.
If you are building a car-free loop around Hakone, the Hakone route guide explains how the train, cable car, ropeway and buses fit together. For a broader base decision, see where to stay in Hakone; Sengokuhara’s bus access and highland setting are different from a station-side stay.
Check these terms before choosing a rate
Third-party booking pages currently list check-in from 3 to 6 p.m. and checkout from 9 to 11 a.m.; the hotel’s own facility page confirms check-in from 3 p.m. and checkout by 11 a.m., but does not give the same final check-in time. Booking.com also says guests cannot enter the property between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. If your plans involve dinner outside or a late return, confirm the actual access rule with the hotel and the booking channel you use.
Child policies are inconsistent across booking platforms: Booking.com currently lists children aged 12 and over as eligible, while Trip.com says children are not permitted. Neither should be treated as a universal property rule. The platforms also say that cots and extra beds are unavailable. Contact the inn with the child’s age and confirm the specific plan before paying.
Room rates vary with date, view, occupancy, meal plan and cancellation terms. Compare the exact room category rather than the first price shown in a search result. All ten categories have the room bath; what changes is the layout, view and number of guests the room can take.
