Hawai and Tōgō Onsen Day Trip: Four Baths by the Lake

Compare Hawai-yu Town, Sennentei, Ryuhokaku and Suimeiso by price and lake views. Sennentei’s day bathing is irregular; Suimeiso has a short afternoon window.

Hawai Onsen sits on Lake Tōgō’s west shore; Tōgō Onsen is on the south side, near Matsuzaki Station. Hawai-yu Town charges ¥450 for a simple indoor soak. Sennentei has a lakeside bath but irregular day-use access. Ryuhokaku offers a swimsuit spa and pools, while Suimeiso is the closest of the four to a train station.

Compare bathing style and day-use hours as well as admission price.

Hawai-yu Town is the simple, low-cost choice

This municipal bath is for bathing, not an elaborate spa day. Its high glass ceiling brings daylight into three indoor tubs of different sizes, and there is a tatami room for resting afterward. There is no sauna or outdoor bath. Adult admission is ¥450; children in elementary and junior high school pay ¥260, and preschool children ¥120.

The current hours are 10 am to 9 pm, with last reception at 8:30 pm. The town is trialling a 10 am opening through 31 March 2027; older listings may still say 9 am. Thursdays are the exception to plan around: the bath opens at 5 pm on Thursdays other than the fourth Thursday of the month, when it is closed. Check the calendar if Thursday is your only option.

Hawai-yu Town suits a short soak between other stops. If the point of the outing is outdoor bathing, a sauna or a long stretch of time in the facility, pay more for a different option.

Sennentei has the lakefront setting, but call before going

Adult admission¥1,000
Children up to elementary-school age¥500

Payment and diningCash only; no dining facility for day visitors

The bathing areas look across Lake Tōgō. The inn describes them as 100% source-fed, with no recirculation.

The important detail is availability. Sennentei’s current day-use information says bathing is offered irregularly and asks visitors to enquire in advance. A regional inn association still lists a broad daily window, but the inn’s newer notice is the one to follow. Do not build a fixed itinerary around an old 11 am–8 pm listing.

Ryuhokaku is the one for swimming together

At Yuasys Tōgō Ryuhokaku, the main spa area is swimsuit-only. It has ten bathing pools, dry and mist saunas, outdoor baths facing Lake Tōgō, an adult pool, a children’s pool and a 27-metre water slide. Families and mixed-gender groups can use this part together, which changes the experience from a typical Japanese public bath.

Full facility, including swimsuit spa¥1,070¥760¥510
Chinese-style bath only¥450¥390¥320

Swimsuits are required in the spa zone and are not used in the separate Chinese-style bath.

The swimsuit zone closes at 9 pm and the Chinese-style bath at 9:30 pm. The regular closure is the fourth Tuesday; if it falls on a public holiday, the facility opens that day and closes on the next weekday. During school holiday periods, the schedule can differ, so check before setting out.

Choose the full facility if your group will actually use the pools and spa. For a quiet, quick soak, the Chinese-style bath is the cheaper ticket and avoids paying for facilities you will not use.

Suimeiso is easiest without a car

Suimeiso is about a three-minute walk from JR Matsuzaki Station, making it the clearest choice here if you want to arrive by rail and avoid a taxi.

The inn’s outdoor baths are on the fifth floor, but they are not part of ordinary day-use admission. The current rule for outside visitors is access to the indoor public bath only. You can see the lake from there, though the view and bathing setup differ from the open-air facilities shown in many accommodation photos. Body soap, rinse-in shampoo and a hair dryer are provided; bring your own towel.

The short reception window still applies. During busy periods, day-use access may be limited; call first if making a special trip.

Getting between the two sides of the lake

The two hot-spring areas share a lake, not a single compact bath district. From Kurayoshi Station, the local bus to Hawai Onsen takes about 20 minutes. Hawai-yu Town and Sennentei are on that side. On the south shore, Matsuzaki Station puts Suimeiso within an easy walk; Ryuhokaku is in the Hikiji area beside Enchoen, so check the current local bus or taxi option rather than assuming it is next door to the station.

Without a car, Suimeiso is the least complicated choice. Hawai Onsen is reachable by bus, but the day’s timetable determines how long you can stay and how easily you can move between facilities. For a two-bath outing, keep to one side of the lake unless the bus connections line up. Save the return departure before you start bathing; a missed local service can leave a long wait.

Nearby Misasa Seiryuso has public and private baths. Our Japanese bathhouse guide explains the differences between an onsen, sento and large bath complex.
