Shobara Onsen Day Trips: Four Baths Across Separate Districts

Shobara’s four day-use baths are spread across separate districts. Match Laforet, Suzuran-no-Yu, Akebonoso or Tojo Onsen to your route.

Shobara is large enough that “near Shobara” does not tell you whether a bath is convenient. The four day-use facilities below are spread across the city. They make sense as stops on different itineraries; trying to visit several in one day is usually a poor use of time, especially without a car.

BathCurrent adult admissionPublished hoursA good fit when…
Laforet Shobara¥90011am–8pmYou are around central Shobara or Bihoku Hillside Park and want a broad choice of baths.
Suzuran-no-Yu¥620; ¥360 on Wednesdays10:30am–9pm, with an 11:30am winter startYour day is built around Dogo-yama, hiking or skiing.
Akebonoso¥360Bathing 11am–9pm; last reception 8:30pmYou will be in Hiwa and want an inexpensive, simple soak.
Tojo Onsen¥57010am–9pm; last check-in 8:30pmYou are visiting Taishaku Gorge or Tojo and want a sauna, outdoor bath or pool.

The schedules and prices are published by the facilities or Shobara’s official tourism organization. Suzuran-no-Yu and Akebonoso list weekly closing days; check their linked notices before setting out, since local calendars can change for holidays or seasonal operations.

Central Shobara: Laforet has the widest choice, with one important distinction

Laforet Shobara is the easiest of these four to pair with a central-Shobara outing. Its day-use bath costs ¥900 for adults (middle-school age and up), including bathing tax; elementary-school children pay ¥450 and preschool children enter free. The bathing window is 11am to 8pm.

Laforet has many tubs, a sauna and an outdoor bath. Only the large communal and outdoor baths use the natural spring water; both are heated. Other tubs use fresh water.

The spring water is circulated and filtered with chlorine-based sanitation. Men’s and women’s baths switch between the Asagiri and Yugiri layouts, so the selection varies by day.

Dogo-yama: make Suzuran-no-Yu the finish to an outdoor day

Suzuran-no-Yu sits beside the Hibadogoyama Kogen-so lodging facility in Saijo. The adjoining restaurant serves lunch only, so it is not a dependable dinner stop.

The tourism listing identifies a simple radioactive cold mineral spring and describes the bath as free-flowing from the source. The setting is the reason to choose it: the same source recommends it for Dogo-yama hikers and skiers. From central Shobara, however, the listed drive is about 50 minutes from Shobara Interchange or 40 minutes from Tojo Interchange. It is a destination for a day already spent in the western mountain area, not a cheap add-on from town.

Hiwa: Akebonoso is a local bath, not a resort spa

The operator may change opening days or hours at short notice.

The tourism listing classifies the water as a sodium bicarbonate/chloride cold mineral spring and says the site has parking for about ten regular cars. Its modest scale is part of the decision: go if Hiwa is already on your route or you value a low-cost local bath. The public information does not support selling it as a large spa with a long list of facilities. The nearest listed road approach is about 30 minutes from Takano Interchange.

Tojo: a fuller facility after Taishaku Gorge

Refresh House Tojo, also called Tojo Onsen, has indoor and outdoor baths, a sleeping bath, jets, cold bath, cascade shower and sauna. The facility also has a 25-metre heated pool, gym and restaurant. Pool and gym hours are shorter than bathing hours, so check their schedule before buying the combined ticket.

The bath is open 10am–9pm, with last check-in at 8:30pm. Wednesday is the usual closing day; the operator says it opens on public holidays and closes the following day instead. Its latest published operating information confirms the facility has reopened after the temporary closure announced in December 2025. The operator reported the onsen and restaurant resumed on 29 January 2026, with the pool reopening on 29 April. Check the latest notice if a particular facility matters to your visit.

A practical way to choose

Start with the day’s main stop, not the admission price. Laforet is the straightforward central-area option; Suzuran-no-Yu belongs with Dogo-yama; Akebonoso makes sense in Hiwa; and Tojo Onsen pairs most naturally with the gorge or the Tojo area. If you are travelling by public transport, confirm the final leg and return service before committing. The available official pages give road approaches more clearly than they establish a convenient same-day bus connection to each bath.

For a different part of the prefecture, compare the Miyahama day-use onsen guide or the Ujina and Rakurakuen bath comparison; both cover more compact trips than Shobara’s spread-out districts.
