Lake Akan Day-Use Onsen: Which Bath Fits Your Day?

Compare Gozensui, New Akan and Tsuruga by price and arrival cutoff. The cruise and airport bus need separate timing, and New Akan has a November 2026 closure.

Lake Akan’s three main hotel baths suit different kinds of day trip. Hotel Gozensui is the lowest-cost, straightforward soak; New Akan Hotel bundles its lake-view public bath with a mixed-gender rooftop spa; Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga has the broadest bathing selection, but the narrowest arrival window. The useful question is not which hotel is “best”—it is whether your bus, boat and bathing time actually fit together.

For an evening soak or winter events, see the Lake Akan winter stay guide. This page covers day-use baths.

New Akan Hotel¥1,300Noon–5 p.m.Public bath and Sky Garden SpaOutdoor spa can close in bad weather; towel set is ¥300
Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga¥2,5002–6 p.m.; last entry 3 p.m.Public baths; adult and child towel loans includedSeasonal no-day-use dates; bath selection varies by day and time

Children’s rates differ: Gozensui lists ¥500 for elementary-school children; New Akan lists ¥650 for children; Tsuruga charges ¥1,500 for ages four through elementary school and ¥500 for younger children. Check with each hotel about age cutoffs if you are travelling with a preschooler.

Hotel Gozensui: the simplest bath stop

Gozensui’s official day-use page lists bathing from noon to 7 p.m. for ¥1,000 per adult and ¥500 per elementary-school child. Towels are not included. The hotel describes its public bath as 100% free-flowing spring water and lists two pool settings, 40°C and 42°C, on its onsen page. Those are bathing-pool temperatures, not a measurement of the source water.

The catch is availability. The hotel calls the schedule irregular and says day bathing may be suspended over holiday periods. Call before building a day around it: 0154-67-2031. If you mainly want a bath after the cruise or a short walk, Gozensui’s longer window is more forgiving than Tsuruga’s.

New Akan Hotel: the only mixed-gender spa in this comparison

New Akan lists day-use entry from noon to 5 p.m. for ¥1,300, including its public bath and Sky Garden Spa. The rooftop spa is a shared area, so visitors must wear swimwear or the hotel’s free bathing garment; the regular public baths remain separate. A rented bath-and-face-towel set costs ¥300. Shampoo, body wash and other amenities are listed for the public bath.

The Sky Garden Spa is outdoors and may close in bad weather. If the lake-facing rooftop is the reason for choosing this hotel, check its status before paying. The indoor public bath remains the alternative, but it is a different experience.

There is also a dated maintenance closure to account for: the hotel has announced that all services, including day bathing, will be closed from after checkout on November 12 until 3 p.m. on November 16, 2026. Its telephone lines will also be unavailable during the hotel closure. Recheck the notice if travelling around those dates.

Tsuruga: more bath variety, but arrive early

Tsuruga’s day-use page lists admission from 2 to 6 p.m., but the last entry is 3 p.m. Adult admission is ¥2,500; children aged four through elementary school pay ¥1,500, and younger children ¥500. Towels are available to adults and children. Which of the hotel’s main baths is open to day visitors depends on the day and time, so do not expect to use every bath during one visit.

The operator lists day-use closures during Golden Week (May 2–5), Obon (August 8–15), Silver Week (September 19–22) and the New Year period (December 30–January 3). These are the published 2026 periods; check the hotel’s day-use page for the dates that apply to your own trip. Guests with tattoos are not permitted in its public baths under the hotel FAQ.

Fit bathing around the boat and buses

The Lake Akan sightseeing cruise takes about 85 minutes, including a stop at Churui Island’s Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center. The operator’s 2026 season runs April 15–November 30, with irregular departures through April 30 and fewer sailings late in the season. Current fares are ¥2,700 for adults and ¥1,390 for children. It does not run in winter; check the operator’s timetable for your date, since weather can affect departures.

The cruise pier sits in the same lakeside district as the hotels, but a boat ride is not a quick add-on: allow the full 85 minutes, plus time to walk between the pier, hotel reception and bus center. If Tsuruga is your choice, take the cruise early enough to reach the hotel before its 3 p.m. cutoff. Gozensui’s later closing time leaves more room to reverse that order.

For a car-free visit, Akan Bus runs directly between Kushiro Airport and Lake Akan Onsen. The current timetable is valid April 1, 2026–March 31, 2027, and the ride to the bus center takes roughly 75–80 minutes.

The listed airport arrivals and return departures are easier to compare separately:

DirectionListed timesSeasonal services
Kushiro Airport → Lake Akan11:15, 12:10, 14:10, 16:50, 19:1514:10 runs July 1–October 31
Lake Akan → Kushiro Airport / Kushiro Station7:30, 10:20, 11:50, 12:40, 16:1510:20 and 12:40 are seasonal

These buses follow flight schedules and may change. Check the operator’s timetable for your date rather than relying on an old screenshot.

For a same-day trip, identify the return bus first. The 16:15 departure is the last listed bus from Lake Akan toward Kushiro Airport and Kushiro Station; it reaches the airport at 17:25 and the station at 18:15. That can support an afternoon soak, but it is not a safe connection to a flight or train with little buffer. The airport bus page says to recheck the timetable for the date of travel.

For route details and the current airport-bus timetable, use the Lake Akan access guide. If this schedule leaves too little time to bathe without rushing, the Lake Akan day trip vs. overnight comparison weighs the trade-off.

A practical way to choose

Pick Gozensui when price and a generous afternoon window matter most, provided the hotel confirms day bathing is available. Choose New Akan when you want to share the rooftop spa with someone of another gender and are comfortable with its weather risk and earlier close. Tsuruga is the strongest choice for varied hotel baths, but only if you can arrive before 3 p.m. and your date is outside its listed closure periods.

The Lake Akan cruise is a warm-season option, while the hotel baths are the day-use choices described on their operator pages. Don’t assume that a boat, bath or bus will run just because another part of the district is open. Confirm each service separately—especially in shoulder season, on holidays and during the November New Akan maintenance closure.
