Yamashiro or Yamanaka Onsen? Choose by the Shape of Your Day
Compare Yamashiro and Yamanaka Onsen for a day trip: ¥500 public baths, Yamashiro’s historic Kosoyu and Yamanaka’s Kakusenkei gorge walk.
The useful question is not which spring is “better.” It is whether you want to spend your time around two historic bathhouses or out walking beside a gorge. Yamashiro keeps its main sights close together. Yamanaka’s Kikunoyu is also central, but the river path and bridges are what make a longer stay worthwhile.
What the ¥500 bath ticket gets you
Yamashiro Soyu and Yamanaka Kikunoyu each charge ¥500 for adult admission. Yamashiro has a second option, Kosoyu, at ¥700; the 2026 adult combined ticket is ¥1,000. Soyu is the practical bath. Kosoyu is a restored Meiji-period bathhouse, with Kutani tilework and stained glass, and no showers or taps for washing. It is meant for soaking, not for a full wash with soap and shampoo.
Kikunoyu is a local communal bath, with the men’s and women’s baths in separate buildings beside Yamanakaza. Its setting is less of a museum visit and more a working hot-spring town. Adult entry is ¥500, and the bath is open 6:45am–10pm. It closes on the second and fourth Tuesdays; if a closure falls on a national holiday, it moves to the following day. Yamashiro’s two baths close on the fourth Wednesday morning, reopening at noon.
Two hours, four hours or a full afternoon?
With about two hours, Yamashiro is easier to do well. Visit the Yunokawa quarter, choose either Soyu or Kosoyu, and leave time for the short walk between them. If you are already staying at an inn with a bath, Kosoyu may add more character than another ordinary soak; if you need a place to wash, use Soyu.
Four hours can go either way. In Yamashiro, you can visit both baths and still have time for a slow look around the quarter. In Yamanaka, one bath plus a section of the Kakusenkei trail is a better plan than trying to walk the whole area. Weather, trail conditions and seasonal businesses affect how much of the gorge visit makes sense.
Give Yamanaka most of a day if you want Kikunoyu, the bridges and the riverside walk without watching the clock. The Kawadoko tea seats are seasonal: from April through October they are listed for 9:30am–4pm, and in November 10am–3pm. Rain or rising water can stop service; the seasonal listing also notes maintenance closures. The early-September 2026 maintenance dates have passed, so check for current notices rather than relying on that old dated closure.
Getting between them without a car
Both districts are reached from Kaga Onsen Station on the Onsen-Yamanaka Line. Yamashiro is the shorter ride, around 12 minutes; Yamanaka Bus Terminal is about 30 minutes away. Some departures continue to Kikunoyu-mae and Korogi Bridge, while others terminate at the bus terminal. The current published adult fares from Kaga Onsen Station are ¥290 to Yamashiro and ¥470 to Yamanaka Bus Terminal.
Yamanaka is not difficult without a car, but the return bus should shape your timing. If you plan to combine both districts, the transfers matter more than the train ride from Kanazawa. The no-car Yamashiro and Yamanaka day-trip plan uses one workable timetable pattern and explains what to trim if the day runs late.
Choose Yamashiro for the shorter, more contained visit or the historical bathing architecture. Choose Yamanaka when you want the bath to be one part of a walk through the gorge. If the day is too short for both, staying in one place will feel less rushed than ticking off two names.
