Is a Room Upgrade Worth It at Kusatsu Onsen? Check What Actually Changes

Check whether a Kusatsu room upgrade adds a natural hot-spring bath, more space or a Yubatake view; in-room bathing varies by inn.

The words “onsen room,” “suite” and “Yubatake view” do not describe the same upgrade. Ask what the basic room already includes, then decide whether the more expensive category adds something you will use.

Four different upgrade patterns

Kusatsu Hotel 1913: the upgrade may add an in-room hot spring. Standard rooms use the property’s shared baths. Only room types explicitly marked “onsen attached” add a private hot-spring bath. If you expect to bathe in the room more than once, that is a real change in use—not just a larger floor plan. Private-bath slots in the shared facilities are selected after check-in, so they are not a guaranteed substitute for the room upgrade.

Hotel Ichii: a Yubatake view is a view, not a private bath. The hotel’s selected rooms look out over Yubatake, and higher room categories add space or different furnishings. The public baths use two spring sources, but the main room listings do not describe a private natural hot-spring bath. Even the Yubatake-view Executive Room lists a shower room rather than a bathtub.

Tokinoniwa: every room already has a natural hot-spring bath. The room bath uses Yukawa spring and is filled when needed; the inn explicitly says it is not continuously flowing. A larger room therefore buys more space, a different layout or a higher guest capacity, not the first access to a private onsen.

La Vista Kusatsu Hills follows the same basic rule. All rooms have a Yukawa spring bath, so the upgrade is about the room’s size, beds and design. The property also has four shared private baths. It is an adults-only hotel for guests aged 13 and over.

A quick way to price the upgrade

Compare the two specific rooms you would realistically book for the same date, number of guests and meal plan. Then ask three questions: Is the bath natural spring water? Is it private to the room, or a shared facility? Is it continuously flowing, or filled when you choose to bathe?

Pay extra for an in-room spring if you expect to bathe privately or want to soak on your own schedule. If you will spend most of the day outside and only need a place to sleep, a larger room or a view may not justify the upgrade. Choose a property first with the Kusatsu ryokan guide, then compare its room types here.
