How to Get to Manza Onsen: Trains, Buses and Mountain Roads
Reach Manza by train and seasonal bus from Karuizawa or via Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi. Winter roads and the final mountain transfer affect each route.
Manza Onsen is not at Manza-Kazawaguchi Station. The station is the rail gateway; a Seibu Kanko Bus ride of about 40 minutes is still needed to reach the highland resort at roughly 1,800 metres. Build the trip around that last connection first, then choose the train or driving route that fits it.
| Tokyo approach | Fastest listed time | Best fit | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hokuriku Shinkansen to Karuizawa, then buses via Manza-Kazawaguchi | About 3 hours from Ueno | A rail-and-bus trip when the Karuizawa and mountain-bus departures connect | Both bus legs need date-specific timetable checks. |
| Limited Express Kusatsu-Shima to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi, then JR and bus | About 3 hours 40 minutes from Ueno | A route that already fits a Gunma or Kusatsu itinerary | A longer fastest time than the Karuizawa route, with train and bus connections to coordinate. |
| Local-train route via Takasaki, then bus | About 4 hours 30 minutes | A longer stay where arrival time matters less | The longer rail leg leaves less time for a same-day bath. |
These are the association’s fastest route estimates, not guaranteed door-to-door times. In every public-transport option, the final bus up to Manza sets the useful connection; pick that bus before buying the rail ticket.
From Tokyo via Karuizawa
For a straightforward rail-and-bus route from Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Karuizawa. The Manza Onsen Association gives a fastest journey of about three hours from Ueno: roughly 70 minutes by Shinkansen to Karuizawa, around 70 minutes on the Seibu bus toward Manza-Kazawaguchi, then about 40 minutes on the route bus up to Manza Onsen.
Those are journey segments, not a guaranteed three-hour door-to-door trip. The buses are the limiting part: check that the Karuizawa departure connects with the onward bus on your date, and confirm the return before buying rail tickets. The public bus from Karuizawa leaves from the station’s north side. Hotel shuttles, when offered, have separate rules and are generally for overnight guests.
Via Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi
If you are already travelling through Gunma or coming from Kusatsu, the route via Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi may fit better. The association lists a fastest journey of about three hours and 40 minutes from Ueno using the Kusatsu-Shima limited express, the JR Agatsuma Line to Manza-Kazawaguchi and the final bus to Manza.
Without the limited express, the association’s Tokyo route via Takasaki takes about four hours and 30 minutes at its fastest. This can make sense for a longer stay where rail cost matters more than arrival time. For a same-day bath, the longer rail leg can leave little usable time once you account for the mountain bus and the facility’s last admission. The Manza day-use bath comparison lists the current windows for the two Prince hotels.
Do not assume that Kusatsu and Manza have a frequent, year-round direct connection just because they are close on a map. Route availability and road conditions change by season; confirm the actual service for your travel date.
Check the seasonal bus timetable before the train
The association says bus departure times change by season. It posted a Seibu Kanko Bus timetable-change notice on September 19, 2026, so an older guide or saved itinerary may no longer line up. Start with the live Seibu timetable and choose a bus that gives you enough time at the hotel or bath; then select the train that reaches the stop with a sensible connection buffer.
For an overnight stay, ask the hotel whether a guest shuttle is operating on your dates and whether advance reservation is required. The 2026 summer shuttle from Karuizawa runs only on listed dates between April 5 and November 20, has blackout dates, and requires a reservation by 5 p.m. two days ahead. That schedule should not be treated as a year-round service. The Manza Prince stay guide explains the distinction between public buses and hotel transfers.
Driving: fuel up before the climb
The association estimates about three hours and 10 minutes from Nerima to Manza in normal conditions, either via Shibukawa-Ikaho or Usui-Karuizawa. Treat that as a route outline, not a winter arrival guarantee. Mountain weather, traffic controls and seasonal closures can add time.
There is no petrol station in Manza Onsen. Fill up before entering the mountain area. The association asks drivers to prepare studless winter tyres or chains during the November-to-May winter period and points visitors to Gunma’s road cameras for current snow conditions. Even if the lowlands are clear, check the highland route before departure.
National Route 292, the old Shiga-Kusatsu Highland Route, normally closes for winter around mid-to-late November and reopens around mid-April, but exact dates and reopening can change with snow or slope conditions. That closure does not mean every route to Manza is closed; check the road notice for the specific approach you plan to use. Do not rely on the Kusatsu crossing as a winter shortcut.
A practical order for planning
- Open the current bus timetable for your date and identify both the uphill and return services.
- Choose the rail approach—Karuizawa or Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi—that actually connects with those buses.
- If driving, pick the route only after checking road cameras, closures and winter equipment requirements.
- Confirm your hotel’s check-in cutoff, shuttle rules and any planned bath closure before finalising the day.
Manza is manageable without a car, but it rewards advance coordination. If the timetable leaves only a short bathing window, consider staying overnight rather than trying to make the last bus carry the whole plan. For that decision, see the Manza Prince Hotel stay guide.
If you are weighing the mountain transfer against a more flexible town visit, compare Manza and Kusatsu. For one bath versus a night in Manza, see the day-trip or overnight guide; the Gunma onsen guide covers other regional stops.
