Okuhida Ryokan Day-Use Baths: Three Inns, Different Rules

Compare ¥500 day bathing at Tanaka with Okada’s larger ¥900 bath and Yakedake’s bathing circuit; confirm walk-in hours and access.

Checked: September 28, 2026

An inn’s bathing facilities and its day-use ticket are separate things. A booking page may list private baths because overnight guests can use them; that does not mean a walk-in visitor can add one to a public-bath admission. The three properties below accept outside bathers under different conditions, and only one clearly advertises private bathing specifically for day visitors: Hirayu no Mori, which is covered separately below.

PropertyCurrent day-use informationWhat it is good forWhat is not confirmed or included
Ryokan Tanaka2–5 p.m.; adults ¥500; hand towel ¥100; bath towel rental ¥200A short, low-cost visit to a small Hirayu innIts listing shows a private bath at the property, but does not say day visitors may use it
Okada RyokanAdults ¥900; ages 4 through elementary school ¥500; ages 0–3 freeA larger indoor bath and garden open-air baths near Hirayu Bus TerminalThe official page does not give regular day-use hours; private baths are described for overnight guests
Okuhida Garden Hotel YakedakeAdults ¥900; noon–10 p.m., last entry 9 p.m.; children under elementary-school age freeA larger bathing circuit and a mixed outdoor section with bathing wear providedTowels cost extra; day visitors cannot use the private bath or Tenno-sen

Do not make the journey based on an old timetable copied from another site. Okada lists admission but asks visitors to call about suspension days; Yakedake says busy periods can shorten or restrict day-use hours. Tanaka’s 2–5 p.m. window is narrow, so it is worth checking that the inn is accepting visitors on your date.

Ryokan Tanaka: the least expensive confirmed visit

Tanaka is a small inn in Hirayu. The Okuhida tourism association currently lists outside bathing from 2 to 5 p.m. for ¥500. A hand towel is ¥100 and a bath towel can be rented for ¥200. Its listing describes indoor and outdoor baths for men and women, plus one private bath, and identifies the spring as a simple hot spring with a source temperature of about 98°C.

The private-bath distinction is important: the listing confirms the bath exists at the inn, but it does not state that day visitors can book or use it. If bathing together is essential, call the inn before setting out. Do not rely on a room-booking site's “private bath” amenity label as permission to use it with a day ticket.

Okada Ryokan: more room to bathe, but check the time window

Mountain settlement around Hitoegane in Shin-Hirayu Onsen

Okada Ryokan is a short walk from Hirayu Bus Terminal, making it easier to fit into a bus connection than an inn farther up the valley. Its official page lists adult day admission at ¥900, ¥500 for children aged four through elementary school, and free admission for children aged three and under. It also notes that day-use access may be unavailable on closure days or when the building is reserved by a group; visitors are asked to call about suspension days.

The bathing area includes a large indoor bath, a garden outdoor bath and a distinctive iron-pot outdoor bath. The property describes its garden bath as free-flowing spring water; it lists the iron-pot bath at about 37°C. Those details describe specific baths, not a single temperature for the whole facility.

Okada has private baths at its separate Warakutei wing, but the current official pages describe these as guest facilities. The 50-minute session costs ¥2,800 and is booked on the day, with use listed from 3 to 8 p.m.; the site says advance reservations are not accepted. It does not confirm that ordinary day visitors can use these baths. Ask directly if a private session is the reason for your visit.

Yakedake: a full afternoon, with a mixed-bathing option

Okuhida Garden Hotel Yakedake lists day-use admission at ¥900, normally from noon to 10 p.m. with last entry at 9 p.m. The current bathing page says children below elementary-school age are free. The hotel lends a bathing garment for the mixed outdoor area at no charge, which lets couples and families use that section together. Children’s bathing garments are not provided.

Bring your own towels or budget for the hotel’s separate towel charges: a hand towel is ¥200 and bath-towel rental is ¥200.

Day-use admission excludes the private bath and Tenno-sen riverside bath. The main mixed section is open noon–10 p.m.; between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. it is women-only. Peak dates can have shorter day-use hours, so check the hotel’s news or call before a long bus trip.

Need a private bath on a day trip?

Hirayu no Mori is the clearest option in the area for a day-use private bath: its official page lists a 45-minute session for ¥3,000, available from noon to 3 p.m. with last reception at 2:15 p.m. Phone reservations are not accepted. Regular day-use admission is separate, and the private slots are limited to that short window.

The Okuhida public-bath comparison covers Hirayu no Mori and the simpler outdoor baths. For the full valley bus route and stop variants, use the Takayama-to-Okuhida access guide. A day-use fee does not reserve a room, and accommodation links on booking sites do not book an outside-bathing slot.

The spring water is not the same at all three inns

Tanaka lists a simple hot spring with source water around 98°C. Okada describes a sulfur-sodium-chloride-bicarbonate spring, a combined flow of about 1,200 litres per minute and a source temperature around 96°C; that is not the same as the roughly 37°C iron-pot tub. Yakedake’s garden baths are another facility and water setup altogether, so “natural onsen” alone is not enough to compare bathing feel or temperature.

If you are travelling without a car

Okada is the easiest of the three to add around a bus connection: it is about a three-minute walk from Hirayu Bus Terminal. Tanaka is also in Hirayu, but its 2–5 p.m. bathing window leaves less room for a delayed arrival. Yakedake is farther along the valley; check both the correct Nohi Bus stop and the return departure before going, especially if the hotel’s day-use hours are shortened.

Choose by the bath you need today

For the lowest confirmed ticket, Tanaka is a short ¥500 visit, provided you arrive within its limited window. Choose Okada if you want a fuller inn-style bathing area near the transfer hub and have confirmed that day-use is operating. Yakedake has the most varied circuit and a mixed section with bathing wear, but it takes longer and its hours can tighten on busy dates. If you must have a private bath on the day, none of these three confirms it as part of ordinary day-use; Hirayu no Mori is the separate option with a published private-session product.

Tanaka’s listed day-use admission is ¥500 for adults; towels cost extra. Okada’s private baths are listed for overnight guests, and the operator does not confirm day-visitor access.
