Four Osaka Sento with a Modern Twist
Meet four Osaka-area sento with different draws, from a redesigned bathhouse to a sauna-led visit and a lively evening neighbourhood bath.
| Bathhouse | What sets it apart | Hours and adult price |
|---|---|---|
| COCOFURO Oomineyu | Music-linked auto-löyly, deep cold bath and early opening | 6 a.m.–midnight; ¥600, sauna +¥300 |
| Ogi Onsen | A revived bathhouse with a three-level auto-löyly sauna and a Nordic-style lobby | 2 p.m.–midnight; Thursday closed; ¥600, sauna +¥200 with bath towel |
| Takarayu, Juso | Jazz in the bathing area, carbonated bath and a crowd the association describes as lively with younger visitors on weekends | 3 p.m.–midnight; Monday closed; ¥600 standard fare |
| Utopia Shiratama Onsen | Early hours, an ice bath and a sauna with a separate two-hour charge | 6 a.m.–1 a.m.; ¥600, sauna +¥300 |
The word “modern” covers several different things here. Oomineyu and Ogi Onsen both reopened after substantial changes. Takarayu is a neighbourhood bath rather than a recent design project; its draw is the combination of Juso’s food scene, music and a sauna. Shiratama has kept updating its equipment over a much longer operating history.
There is a wider reason these baths are being noticed: Osaka’s bathhouse association says interest among younger visitors and international travellers has grown, while its digital stamp rallies and bathhouse app make local sento easier to find. That trend is real, but it does not mean every renovated bath attracts the same crowd. Of these four, the association specifically describes younger visitors gathering at Takarayu on weekends; for the others, renovation, sauna updates and programming are the evidence, not a guess based on social-media photos.
Oomineyu: a new layout for a familiar local role
The former Oomine Onsen closed in 2023 and reopened as COCOFURO Oomineyu in August 2024. Its current page lists:
| Detail | Current listing |
|---|---|
| Hours | 6 a.m.–midnight; final entry 11:30 p.m. |
| Adult admission | ¥600 |
| Sauna add-on | ¥300 |
| Auto-löyly cycle | Every 30 minutes |
| Cold bath depth | About 90 cm |
The sauna uses a music-and-hot-air cycle. There is also a salt hot bath and a changing herbal bath.
Oomineyu is in Hirano, roughly a 12-minute walk from Hirano Station. That walk is the catch if you are based centrally, though the early opening can be useful if you are already in the area. Its “ultra-soft water” and themed baths describe the facility, not a documented natural hot spring.
It also has free shampoo and body wash and 11 free parking spaces. The men’s Milky Bath, which was temporarily replaced during maintenance, was restored on September 29, 2026. Check the operator’s notices in case of another change.
Ogi Onsen: the sauna is the centrepiece
Ogi Onsen in Daito reopened in November 2024 under Yutonamisha. The operator describes a spacious three-tier auto-löyly sauna, varied baths and a lobby with a Nordic-inspired design. Adult admission is ¥600, with a ¥200 sauna supplement that includes a bath towel. It opens from 2 p.m. to midnight and closes on Thursdays.
Suminodo Station is about an eight-minute walk away, and the bathhouse lists 13 free parking spaces. That makes it more practical for people staying east of central Osaka or travelling by car than for someone making a cross-city trip just to save ¥100 on a sauna fee. The bathhouse name is not evidence of natural spring water.
Takarayu in Juso: an evening stop, not a new-build spa
Takarayu is two minutes from the east exit of Hankyu Juso Station. The bathhouse association lists a carbonated bath, far-infrared sauna and jazz in the bathing area; its description also notes that younger people often gather there on weekends. It closes on Mondays and is listed as open from 3 p.m. to midnight.
This one makes most sense as part of an evening around Juso, where food and the bathhouse are close together. If sauna equipment is your main reason for going, check the current charge at the counter: the association page does not give a separate current sauna price.
Takarayu is the clearest choice if you want to see a neighborhood bath functioning as part of a lively evening out. The association itself notes younger weekend visitors, while the station, restaurants and bathhouse are all close together. That is a more grounded reason to call it youth-friendly than simply labelling its decor “modern.”
Shiratama: early hours and more explicit rules
Utopia Shiratama Onsen opens at 6 a.m. and lists a 1 a.m. close. Its official site currently lists ¥600 admission and a ¥300 sauna charge for a two-hour session. Shampoo, body wash and hair dryers are provided; the towel set is sold separately. The bathhouse explicitly says visitors with tattoos may bathe. Do not assume that policy applies at the other three.
Shiratama is the easiest of the four to plan around if you want an early bath and clearly published prices. The ice bath and sauna setup suit visitors who want more than a quick wash, though a popular evening may be less quiet than a small neighbourhood bath.
The operator’s current page explicitly accepts guests with tattoos at this public bath. That rule belongs to Shiratama and should not be transferred to Oomineyu, Ogi or Takarayu, whose current information does not provide the same clear permission.
Choosing by area
Oomineyu is the Hirano option, Ogi Onsen is near Suminodo in Daito, Takarayu is the Juso stop, and Shiratama sits in the Kyobashi area. Their opening hours, sauna policies and location matter more than a broad “young people’s favourite” label. Of these four, only Takarayu’s association listing makes a direct note about younger weekend visitors.
On the sauna bill, Ogi is lowest at ¥800 including its sauna add-on and bath towel. Oomineyu and Shiratama come to ¥900 before towels; Shiratama’s sauna ticket is limited to two hours. Takarayu’s association page marks a paid sauna but does not give the supplement, so confirm at the counter. It is rarely worth travelling across town just to save ¥100; pick a bath near where you are staying.
For an early bath, Oomineyu and Shiratama both open at 6am. Oomineyu closes at midnight, while Shiratama stays open until 1am; Ogi and Takarayu start at 2pm and 3pm respectively. None is an overnight sleeping facility, even when it stays open late.
The four are spread across distinct areas: Hirano in the southeast, Daito east of the city, Juso on the north side, and Kyobashi around the Osaka Castle corridor. Match the facility to the rest of your day before comparing sauna hardware. None is established as a natural spring by the current material; ultra-soft water, a carbonated feature bath and a bathhouse name are not spring analyses.
If you want a conventional first sento, start with the Osaka sento guide. For the bath options in each district, see the Hirano guide, Yodogawa and Higashiyodogawa guide or Asahi and Joto guide. If natural spring water is the priority, compare the Osaka day-use onsen guide instead.
For a first look at neighbourhood bathhouses, use the Osaka sento guide. If you are after a larger natural-spring complex rather than a sento, the day-onsen guide compares a different kind of visit.
