Tsurumachi-yu in Osaka: A Wood-Heated Sento in Southern Taisho
Tsurumachi-yu is a wood-heated Taisho sento with a dry sauna and cold bath. It opens at 12:30 pm; from JR Taisho, allow about 20 minutes by bus.
Tsurumachi-yu is a neighbourhood bathhouse at the far end of Taisho Ward, not a walk-in stop beside Taisho Station. Its early afternoon opening is useful if you are already near Tsuruhama, IKEA Osaka or the southern part of the ward; it is a longer outing if you are crossing the city just for a soak.
Hours, admission and equipment
| Detail | Current listing |
|---|---|
| Hours | 12:30–9:30 p.m. |
| Weekly closure | Tuesday |
| Adult admission, Osaka 2026 standard fare | ¥600 |
| Elementary-school child | ¥200 |
| Preschool child | ¥100 |
The facility lists a dry sauna, cold bath, electric bath, seated jet bath and massage chair. It does not publish a current sauna surcharge. Recent dated sauna-user posts suggest an extra charge of around ¥100, but that is not an official price; ask at the counter before paying if the surcharge matters to your budget.
“Wood-heated” refers to the bath water. The association says Tsurumachi-yu uses wood to heat the water and separately lists a dry sauna. There is no basis for calling it a wood-fired sauna, and the heating method does not establish that the bath uses natural spring water. The association’s current equipment list does not include an outdoor bath.
The bus ride is part of the plan
From JR Taisho Station, take an Osaka City Bus towards Tsurumachi. The bathhouse association gives a journey of about 20 minutes to Tsurumachi 2-chome, followed by a three-minute walk. Check the current bus timetable before setting out, especially if you are travelling late in the day; the bath closes at 9:30 p.m.
There are five parking spaces at the bathhouse. That can make a short stop easier if you are already driving around Tsuruhama, but spaces are limited. If all five are occupied, the facility does not advertise a larger overflow lot.
Older online records once described the sauna as suspended; dated user reports from late 2025 and early 2026 show it back in use. The association currently lists both dry sauna and cold bath. The recent visitor estimate of about ¥100 extra for sauna use is only a budgeting guide, not an official fee. User-measured temperatures are snapshots, and the facility publishes no fixed temperature for the sauna, cold plunge or main bath.
The other listed equipment includes electric and seated-jet baths, a massage chair, hair dryers, a baby bed and drinks. There is no outdoor bath in the current official equipment list. The association also says the bath water is heated with wood and notes a history of more than 50 years; neither detail is evidence of a natural spring. For spring water, compare JOY Taisho.
The guide’s subjective planning scores are 75/100 for comfort, 60 for bath variety, 65 for upkeep, 55 for atmosphere, 60 for quiet, 60 for access and 85 for value. They are editorial judgments, not inspection results; the upkeep score is retained because current comparable inspection data is limited. The access score reflects the bus connection, while the value score assumes you are already in southern Taisho or have a car. If your main need is Sunday dawn bathing, Taisho-yu is the better time-specific choice.
Tsurumachi-yu’s appeal is specific: an ordinary sento fare, a dry sauna, and an opening time earlier than many neighbourhood baths. If your must-have is a documented natural spring, JOY Taisho is the better match. For the other nearby options, compare the Taisho and Nishi Ward sento guide.
