Kawatana Onsen Day Use: Seiryusen, Otafuku or Kotengu?
Day-use baths

Kawatana Onsen Day Use: Seiryusen, Otafuku or Kotengu?

Compare three Kawatana Onsen day-use baths by current fees, hours, private-bath access, spring water and transport from JR Kawatana Onsen Station.

Kawatana’s three day-use baths solve different problems. Seiryusen is the low-cost choice and the only one here with four family-bath rooms; Otafuku has the broadest public-bath hours, a sauna and the option to eat kawara soba on site; Kotengu has the clearest source-water claim, but keeps shorter hours and closes every Wednesday and Thursday.

You do not need to visit all three. The facilities sit around the hot-spring area, not beside JR Kawatana Onsen Station, so pick one first and work out the ride back before deciding whether a second soak is realistic.

Seiryusen: cheapest admission, but bring your own kit

Seiryusen has the lowest adult public-bath ticket, but the main bath has no soap, shampoo or towels. The ¥380 hands-free set includes a small towel, shampoo, conditioner and body wash; it does not include a bath towel.

The public bath includes an outdoor pool, electric bath, mist sauna and cold-water bath. Seiryusen also has four family-bath rooms, charged per person rather than per room.

Private family-bath room at Peaceful Seiryusen

The operator identifies the spring as Kawatana Onsen mixed water, a calcium-sodium chloride spring with a pH of 8.2. It says the water is heated during cold weather and chlorine-based chemicals are used for hygiene management. Its separate statement that the four family baths use free-flowing water applies to those rooms; do not extend it to the entire facility.

Seiryusen is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with last entry at 8:30 p.m.; family baths and the rest room close at 8 p.m. It is normally closed on the first Thursday of even-numbered months, plus occasional maintenance days. The next listed fixed closure after this check is October 1, 2026.

Otafuku: more time in the bath, with a one-hour ticket

Outdoor bath at Otafuku’s Santoka public bath

Otafuku’s public bath, Santoka, is the practical choice if you want a sauna, washing amenities and food in one place. It has indoor and outdoor baths, a sauna and a cold-water bath. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hair dryers are provided; towels can be bought or rented.

Otafuku’s public-bath admission varies by day and includes a one-hour limit. Last reception is 10 p.m.; the bath closes at 11 p.m.

Weekday¥950
Weekend or public holiday¥1,150

Visitors with tattoos are not admitted. Children need an accompanying adult; the hotel asks families not to bring children who are still in diapers into the public bath.

Otafuku also sells a bath-and-dining ticket with a ¥1,320 on-site voucher. It can be bought on arrival without a reservation and used toward food such as kawara soba or a hotel-shop purchase. The one-hour bathing limit still applies.

Otafuku’s Gotenyu has four private rooms with outdoor and indoor baths, a sauna and a cold-water bath. Each session lasts 50 minutes and includes two people; at least two guests are required.

Larger rooms cost more. Tattoos are not allowed in these rooms.

Kotengu: the spring itself is the reason to go

Outdoor source-fed bath at Kotengu Ryokan

Kotengu lists two indoor and two outdoor public baths. Its own spring, Kotengu-sen, is a sodium-calcium chloride spring containing weakly radioactive components. The inn gives a source temperature of 43.5°C and says the baths use the water without heating or dilution. That figure is the source temperature, not a guarantee that every tub stays at 43.5°C; the inn notes that the outdoor-bath temperature can vary with the weather.

Kotengu’s day-use listing covers its public baths, not a private-room option. Hours are 3–8 p.m. on weekdays and noon–8 p.m. on weekends; last entry is 7:30 p.m. The inn closes Wednesdays and Thursdays. Shampoo and body wash are provided; bring towels or buy a face towel.

VisitorAdmission
Adult¥800
Elementary-school child¥600
Child aged 3 or older¥400
Face towel¥160

Kotengu is the simplest choice if the water matters more than sauna or a long stay. It does not offer a station pickup. From JR Kawatana Onsen Station, the inn recommends a taxi of about five minutes; free parking is available for drivers.

Getting to the baths

JR Kawatana Onsen Station is roughly two kilometres from the bath area. Seiryusen and Otafuku each describe the station trip as about five minutes by car; Otafuku estimates a 20-minute walk. Kotengu also recommends a five-minute taxi and says it has no shuttle. Otafuku’s complimentary pickup is listed for overnight guests, not as a day-use transfer.

Seiryusen says a Sanden bus runs from Shimonoseki Station to Kawatana Onsen in about an hour, but its access page does not say that the bus stops at each bath. Check the operator’s current timetable, the exact stop and the last return before relying on the bus. A taxi from Kawatana Onsen Station is the more direct option if you are visiting Kotengu or Seiryusen.

If you are staying in Shimonoseki and want alternatives closer to the city, see this comparison of Shimonoseki day-use baths; those have different transport and opening-hour trade-offs from Kawatana.

A quick scorecard, with one caveat

These seven ratings are editorial comparisons, not facility-issued grades:

BathComfortVarietyCleanlinessAtmosphereQuietAccessValue
Seiryusen80908070706595
Otafuku90908580707585
Kotengu85658075906590

Use the scorecard to narrow the choice. Seiryusen has the lowest admission and four family-bath rooms. Otafuku pairs a sauna with dining; Kotengu uses its own spring.

Bathing rules can change which stop works for your group. Otafuku excludes diaper-wearing children from its public bath and bars guests with tattoos from both that bath and its Gotenyu rooms. Its other private rooms, and Seiryusen’s family baths, have separate terms. Seiryusen and Kotengu give no clear tattoo entry rule, so contact either one before your visit if you need an answer.
