Ryoso Makibanoie: Choose Between a Cottage Bath and a Private Bathhouse
Makibanoie has ten cottages, but only three have an in-cottage onsen. The other seven use a private bath assigned to the room; all offer private bathing.
Checked: September 27, 2026 At Makibanoie, “detached cottage” does not automatically mean “onsen in the room.” The inn’s stay guide divides its ten cottages into three with an in-room hot-spring bath and seven that use a designated private bath in the grounds. Both setups give your party a private soak; the difference is distance, weather and when you can use it.
Which cottage makes sense for your trip?
Choose one of the three bath-in-room cottages if you want to bathe right after waking, return to the water late at night, or avoid walking outside in cold or wet weather. The standard detached cottages suit guests who are comfortable walking to their assigned bathhouse. The inn’s guide describes the baths as assigned to guest rooms, rather than a first-come bath you need to book each time; confirm the named bath for your cottage when reserving.
The private-use baths have posted operating windows of 3 p.m. to midnight and 6–9:30 a.m. That is not 24-hour access. Guests who often bathe after midnight should favour a room with its own bath, and should still verify the room’s current rules and hours.
The large outdoor baths are a separate part of the stay
Makibanoie also has two large outdoor baths, Unkai-no-Yu and Manten-no-Yu. They switch between men’s and women’s use by day; they are not the same as the room-assigned private baths. The property identifies its own spring and publishes a pH of 7.9. It does not provide a complete treatment breakdown for every guest-room and private-use tub, so do not assume each bath has identical water handling.
The inn is around an 8–15 minute walk from Yufuin Station depending on the route and pace. Allow more time with luggage, in rain, or if someone in your party walks slowly. There is no property shuttle listed in the current access information.
