When Is a Yufuin Room-Bath Upgrade Worth It?
Compare room-bath options at Tanokura, Hoteiya, Hana no Mai, Ubl, Gettouan and Ashitaba before paying extra for a Yufuin ryokan upgrade.
Checked: September 27, 2026 “Room with an open-air bath” sounds like an easy choice until you notice that some Yufuin inns already put spring water in every room, while others let guests use shared baths privately. Before paying the difference, check what the higher room category actually adds: outdoor air, a bath inside the room, a guaranteed time slot, or simply more space.

Tanokura: the regular room already has spring water
All 11 rooms at Tanokura have an in-room hot spring. Five also have their own open-air bath. That makes the room upgrade a choice about bathing outdoors, not a choice between a private spring bath and no private spring bath at all. The inn also has two gender-separated public baths with outdoor pools; they switch sides in the morning.
If a warm indoor soak is all you need, compare the standard room first. The higher category makes more sense for guests who want fresh air and a bath without leaving their room. Tanokura is close to Lake Kinrinko, so a dawn walk may take up part of the time you would otherwise spend in the private outdoor bath. Hoteiya: decide whether a shared private-use bath is enough
Hoteiya’s room inventory is mixed. Many detached rooms have an outdoor bath, and some also have an indoor bath, but the Lavender and Kokonoe main-building rooms do not list a guest-room bath. Guests can use two private-use baths at no extra charge when vacant. Each session is 40 minutes; the baths are open 3–11 p.m. and 6–9 a.m.
That can cover a couple who wants one shared soak. A room bath is more useful if you expect to bathe at several different times or do not want to wait for a vacant door. The indoor Hotei-no-Yu is also the more sheltered option on a cold or rainy day; Yufudake-no-Yu is open-air.
Hana no Mai: three room categories, three levels of convenience
This eight-room inn lists four upstairs Japanese rooms, two Japanese rooms with an indoor bath, and two detached Japanese-Western rooms with an open-air bath. Its shared private-use indoor and outdoor baths do not require advance booking; guests use them when vacant. The main-building Japanese rooms involve stairs, so check access if that matters to your group.
The indoor-bath category removes the wait without adding an outdoor setting. The detached room adds both a dedicated outdoor bath and separation from the main building. If one family soak is enough, the standard room plus a vacant shared bath may be a reasonable middle ground.
Ubl, Gettouan and Ashitaba: the upgrade is not always an outdoor bath
Ubl’s ten special rooms are listed with a 24-hour, hot-spring indoor bath. Standard rooms rely on the public baths, so this is a meaningful privacy upgrade, but it is not an open-air room bath. It may suit someone who values warmth and easy access more than a view from the tub.
At Gettouan, all 18 detached villas have their own open-air hot-spring bath. The six deluxe annex villas also have access to a separate private-use outdoor bath, and children of junior-high-school age and under are not accepted in that annex. Paying more for the annex does not buy the first private outdoor bath; it buys another bath and a different setting. The grounds have slopes and stairs, and the inn currently says its station shuttle is suspended, so confirm transport before booking.
Nihon no Ashitaba treats privacy differently: its shared baths are used as private-use baths, while guest-room bath facilities vary by cottage. Pick a cottage with a room bath if you want to bathe at any time without walking across the grounds or waiting. Otherwise, the shared bath arrangement may already meet your privacy requirement.

Compare the same room, not just the same words
Booking sites sometimes translate room names differently. Check the building or cottage name, whether spring water reaches the bath, whether it is indoor or open-air, and whether a shared bath is first-come or reserved. Then compare the same dates, meal plan, occupancy and cancellation terms. Room rates change by date, so there is no useful fixed upgrade price to quote here.
