Where to Stay in Yufuin: Choose by Your Next Morning
Choose a Yufuin base around your morning departure, Lake Kinrinko walk or inn dinner. Compare station-side, central, lakeside and outlying stays.
Checked: September 27, 2026 In Yufuin, the address matters most at two moments: when you arrive with bags and when you leave the next day. A station-side room saves a transfer; a lakeside room buys an easier early walk; an outlying ryokan makes more sense when you plan to stay in for dinner and the baths.
Start with tomorrow’s departure
If you have an early JR train or reserved highway bus, the station and bus center are the low-friction choice. The value is not scenery; it is avoiding a morning taxi or a walk with luggage when missing a booked seat would disrupt the trip.
For a late-morning or afternoon departure, the choice opens up. You can fit a quiet walk by the lake or a last soak before returning to the station. A late checkout is not automatic, though, so check the actual room plan before building the morning around it.
If the next stop is another part of Yufu City, such as Tsukahara, plan that transfer separately. The plateau has different road and public-transport access from the town centre, so do not treat it as just another walkable Yufuin neighbourhood.
What do you want from the first hour after waking?
Lake Kinrinko is the reason to choose the eastern side or a property within an easy walk. Its usual foliage window is early to mid-November, though weather shifts the dates; morning mist is conditional, not scheduled. Staying nearby removes the need to cross the busier shopping streets before sunrise.
If you would rather use the inn’s bath, have breakfast and take your time, the lake address adds little. A farther-out property can be a better fit when you intend to spend the night on site and have already arranged the trip back to the station.
Dinner changes how far out makes sense
With dinner included, an outer property may only require transport at check-in and checkout. Without dinner, check which restaurants are actually open at night; daytime foot traffic on Yunotsubo Street does not mean the same choice will be available after shops close.
Yufuin’s evening is quieter than a large city’s. If late-night shops and a busy bar scene are central to the trip, sleeping in Beppu or Fukuoka and visiting Yufuin during the day may fit better. For that trade-off, see Yufuin day trip or overnight.
The town has several distinct walking zones

“Near Yunotsubo” covers different streets and room settings. Check the actual walk from your inn to the station, lake and dinner venue, not just the town name in a listing. Also confirm whether the room has spring water, which bath is private, whether a shuttle runs on your date and what happens to luggage after checkout.
Bags can erase the advantage of a short walk
Yufuin Chikki by the station offers storage and delivery to participating inns. The counter is open 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; delivery from the station to an inn closes at 3 p.m., and collection from an inn at the station closes at 11:30 a.m. Delivery eligibility depends on the property, so check the current list before choosing a distant ryokan on the assumption that your bags can be sent ahead.
JR Kyushu’s temporary station building opened on March 26, 2026, during repair work expected to run into winter 2026. The platform footbath has been closed since March 14 for the work. The station remains the rail and bus hub, but older maps and photos may show access that is no longer available.
