Yufuin Onsen Water Treatment: Flow-Through Does Not Mean Untreated
Learn what flow-through, added water, heating, circulation and disinfection mean—and why Yufuin inns may report different details for room and public baths.
Checked: September 27, 2026 “Source-fed” or “flow-through” sounds like a complete description, but it only answers part of the question. An inn can run hot spring water continuously through a tub and still add water to adjust the temperature. Heating, circulation and disinfection are separate details; do not infer that they are absent simply because the inn advertises a flow-through bath.
| Property and bath scope | What the property information states | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Gettouan, spring water | Flow-through; water is added for temperature adjustment | That “flow-through” means no water is added |
| Yufuin Ubl Hotel, public bath | Hot spring water, with added water, heating and flow-through listed | That these public-bath details apply to its special-room baths |
| Yufuin Ubl Hotel, special rooms | Ten rooms have a private view bath; some plans describe 100% source-fed flow-through use | That the public baths use the same setup |
| Souan Kosumosu, public and private baths | Flow-through is stated; the detached-room bath is also described as source-fed | That every handling method is documented for every tub |
| Baien, main baths | Source-fed flow-through is stated for its main hot-spring facilities | That the family baths have identical published treatment details |
| Tanokura and Hananomai | Flow-through is stated for the public facilities at each inn | That the same description automatically covers every in-room bath |
Gettouan is a useful example of why those labels should stay separate. The inn lists a source temperature of 62°C and a use-point figure of 42°C, and says it adds water to regulate temperature. Flow-through describes how water is supplied and replaced; it does not mean the bath receives untouched water at source temperature.
The second useful example is Ubl Hotel, where the published descriptions distinguish the ten special rooms from the public bath. A guest in a standard room mainly uses the public facilities; the special room has its own private view bath. Don’t reduce the whole property to a single label when the baths have different scopes.
A practical way to read a bath description
When a room or bath is important to your decision, check the exact facility name and ask four direct questions:
- Is the statement about a room bath, a private-use bath, or the public bath?
- Is hot-spring water continuously flowing through that particular bath?
- Is water added or the bath heated to adjust its temperature?
- Are circulation and disinfection described for that bath?
“Not stated” is a valid answer. It does not prove that a property uses a particular method, and it is not evidence of poor water quality. It simply means the public information does not support a stronger claim. If one of these conditions is a firm requirement, ask the inn about the specific room and bath before the free-cancellation deadline.
Baien has a separate, date-limited issue: its notice schedules hot-spring well work from August 17 through November 30, 2026, generally between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The notice allows for machinery noise, vibration and work vehicles, and weather may affect the schedule. Check for a newer update if your stay falls in that period. Construction timing is a comfort consideration, not a description of how the bath water is treated.
