A Day Trip to Zao in Autumn: Pick One Ropeway, Then Soak

Zao is easier to enjoy if you choose one main altitude instead of trying to ride both ropeways and see every pond in a single day. The colour usually starts higher on the mountains and works its way down, but the timing shifts with the year’s weather. Check the latest foliage posts and ropeway operation before leaving Yamagata.

Earlier colour: ride to Jizo Summit

The Zao Ropeway runs in two stages to Jizo Summit at 1,661 metres. The adult return fare is ¥4,400; the final uphill departure for a return ticket is 4 p.m., and the operator says service may pause in poor weather. This is the route for broad mountain views and the Jizo statue, rather than a low-effort forest stroll.

Yamagata Prefecture puts the usual Zao range foliage season from late September to late October, but colour moves downhill from the summit and varies each year. The ropeway’s lower station is about a 15-minute walk from the Zao Onsen bus terminal. A child return ticket is ¥2,200.

Check the live camera and service notice before setting off. A clear forecast in town says little about visibility at 1,661 metres.

Leave time for queues and the descent. If clouds are already covering the summit, there is little point paying for the high-altitude view just because the lower station is open.

Forest and pond scenery: choose Torikabuto

Zao Chuo Ropeway reaches Torikabuto in one ride. A return ticket is ¥2,400 for adults; the observation deck is about a minute from the upper station. From there, you can keep the outing short or continue toward the Central Highlands and Dokko Pond. That extra walk is what makes this option feel different from simply riding up for a panorama.

The bus terminal is about a five-minute walk from the Chuo Ropeway, which makes it the easier start for visitors without a car. The first summer lift can shorten part of the walk toward Dokko Pond, but it has its own fare and hours; check the day’s schedule rather than assuming it runs as late as the ropeway. A late-October visit may suit the lower Central Highlands better than the summit, while a late arrival is usually better spent in town than trying to squeeze in both routes.

Put the bath after the mountain

For a day from Yamagata, take the bus to Zao Onsen, ride one ropeway, then return to the hot-spring town for lunch or a bath. Zao’s large outdoor bath is a seasonal option, not a weather-proof fallback; check its notice before building the day around it. The bus back is the hard deadline, so work backward from the actual return service rather than the bath’s closing time.

The 2026 adult four-bath day ticket costs ¥2,650 and is valid through October 31 for one visit each to Shinzaemon-no-Yu, Kawaraya, Genshichi Roten-no-Yu and Dai-Rotenburo. It saves ¥400 against separate adult admission, but is a poor fit for a day that already includes a ropeway; choose the bath you want rather than rushing through four.

Dai-Rotenburo has no showers or soap, and the uphill walk from the terminal takes about 20 minutes. Its current posted adult admission is ¥850. Confirm opening and last-entry times before walking up.

A quick adult budget from Yamagata

The estimates below use the ¥1,200 one-way bus fare (¥2,400 return), one adult return ropeway ticket where shown, and one ¥850 adult admission to Dai-Rotenburo.

The Torikabuto option includes the ¥1,000 return fare for Chuo Lift 1; you can leave it out and walk to Dokko Pond instead. None of the totals includes food, luggage storage or other personal spending.

These totals are fare examples, not package prices. Check the bus fare and each operator’s current service notice before travelling; the lift and outdoor bath are seasonal, and a closure changes what you can do that day.

In 2026, the Sky Cable is scheduled to remain closed for maintenance through November 3. The Chuo Ropeway and first lift then have a separate maintenance closure from November 4 to 27. Recheck the operators’ notices if travelling in November; an October route plan may no longer work.
