Jizo Summit or Torikabuto? Choosing a Zao Ropeway for Autumn Colours
Compare Zao’s Jizo Summit and Torikabuto ropeways by elevation, walking, fares and autumn timing, then choose based on the view you want.
These are two different mountain days, not interchangeable lifts to the same view. Jizo Summit takes two ropeway stages to a higher alpine landscape. Torikabuto is a single ride from Zao Onsen, with the observation deck almost beside the upper station and forest walks farther on.

Pick Jizo for height, not an easy stroll
The upper station is the higher of the two and gives access to the Jizo statue and alpine trails. The two-stage ride adds a transfer, and the weather can be harsher at altitude. Adult return fare is ¥4,400; children pay ¥2,200. The final uphill departure for a Jizo Summit return ticket is 4 p.m.
A summit ticket is a poor buy if cloud has already erased the view or wind is affecting service.
The foliage tends to change first at higher elevations, but that is a pattern, not a date guarantee. A warm or stormy week can shift the colour quickly, so check current reports before choosing the summit solely on the calendar.
Pick Torikabuto for a more flexible outing
The Central Ropeway goes from Zao Onsen to Torikabuto in a single ride. The official guide places the observation deck about a minute from the upper station. A return ticket is ¥2,400 for adults. If the group wants more than the view, trails lead farther into the Central Highlands and toward Dokko Pond; if not, you can keep the walk short.
This is usually the easier choice for mixed-pace groups or anyone who would rather spend time among trees than add a second transfer. It still depends on ropeway operation, and the longer walk is not a good fit for every visitor.
Let the day’s view settle the choice
Look at the operator’s updates and live conditions before buying a ticket. If the summit is socked in but the lower forest is clear, go to Torikabuto. If the lower area has already lost its colour but the upper slopes still show well, Jizo may be the better use of the day. When both routes look poor, keep to the hot-spring town instead of treating a paid ticket as a reason to go up.
