How to Get to Arima Onsen from Kyoto and Kansai’s Airports
Compare direct buses and rail from Kyoto, Itami, KIX and Kobe Airport to Arima Onsen, with timetable examples and transfer tips.
The best route to Arima depends less on the map distance than on the transfers you will make with your bags. Kyoto and Itami have direct coaches; from Kansai International Airport (KIX), most travellers change at Sannomiya. Kobe Airport has a through bus on selected departures. A direct coach is especially useful with bulky luggage or a fixed ryokan dinner time, while rail gives you more departure choices at the cost of extra changes.
Times below are examples from operator timetables checked on September 27, 2026, not a guarantee of daily service. Check the booking calendar for your date, and leave a realistic gap between landing and a reserved bus.

From Kyoto: book the direct coach if its limited timetable fits
The direct highway coach leaves Kyoto Station’s Hachijo Exit and reaches Arima without a change. The Arima Onsen Tourism Association estimates the ride at about 70 minutes. That simplicity matters when you are checking into a ryokan with a set dinner time or carrying suitcases through several stations.
Keihan Bus lists a one-way adult fare of ¥2,000 from Kyoto Station Hachijo Exit, effective April 1, 2026. The operator also warns that some departures are suspended and recommends booking: seats are prioritized for reservations, and a full bus may not take walk-up passengers.
Keihan’s posted timetable snapshot lists these examples:

The morning departure can work for a day visit or an early arrival before check-in. The afternoon coach is more suited to moving from Kyoto to a ryokan, but arrival at 16:25 still leaves the local walk, check-in, and dinner to fit in. Ask your accommodation about its check-in and last dinner seating before you book.
If no direct departure works, go by rail via Osaka or Kobe, then continue through Tanigami and Arimaguchi to Arima Onsen Station. This gives you more departure flexibility but involves several changes. For a traveler with a backpack, that may be a reasonable trade; with a stroller or multiple large cases, compare the number of times you will carry or roll everything, not only the journey-time estimate.
From Itami Airport: the easiest airport-to-onsen transfer
Itami is the most straightforward of the four gateways. The airport lists Arima Onsen at bus stop 0, with a journey time of about 30 minutes. Hankyu’s current timetable gives these examples:

These are examples, not a promise that every service operates daily. Check the date-specific timetable.
Hankyu lists the adult one-way fare from Itami as ¥1,100. The airport says that buses from stop 0 are reservation-only, except Shinki Bus services, and that tickets are not sold at the airport. Check the fare and booking conditions for the specific service you choose; don’t assume you can board simply because you see a bus at the stop.
Build in time for disembarking, collecting checked bags, and finding stop 0. On the return, do not plan an airport arrival only 30 minutes before check-in: road traffic, airline check-in cutoffs, and security all need their own margin. From KIX: use Sannomiya as the transfer point
KIX’s current airport-bus listings include service to Kobe Sannomiya, but do not list Arima as a direct airport-bus destination. The practical coach route is KIX → Sannomiya → Arima. The airport-to-Sannomiya leg is followed by an Arima-bound highway coach; the Arima Tourism Association estimates about two hours for the bus route overall. Check both timetables for your date, including the time needed to get from the airport bus stop to the Arima coach departure point.
From Sannomiya, the rail alternative is to take the Kobe Municipal Subway to Tanigami, then the Kobe Electric Railway via Arimaguchi to Arima Onsen. The train avoids highway congestion, while the coach avoids several rail changes. For large luggage, the one-change coach route is often simpler; if the coach connection is poor, the train provides another option.
Late arrivals need a separate check: a route that takes about two hours on paper may leave little time for check-in and dinner after immigration, baggage claim, and the transfer. If your flight arrives late in the day, ask the ryokan about its latest arrival time before deciding to continue to Arima that night.
From Kobe Airport: check whether your bus actually continues to Arima
Kobe Airport’s bus information lists Arima Onsen services at stop 5. Shinki Bus describes the Kobe Airport–Sannomiya–Shin-Kobe–Arima route, but only some departures continue to the airport. The route’s existence does not mean every bus from Sannomiya or Shin-Kobe is a through service from the airport.
If a direct departure matches your flight, it saves the Port Liner ride into the city and another transfer. Otherwise, take the Port Liner to Sannomiya and continue by highway coach or by subway and railway via Tanigami. Shinki Bus publishes a timetable revised April 1, 2026; check that current timetable and the airport’s day-specific information rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Allow for the last stretch to your ryokan
Arima’s bus stop or station may not be right beside your accommodation. The town is hilly, and a short walk on a map can mean slopes and uneven lanes with luggage. Before choosing a route, check which stop is closest to your ryokan and whether it offers a shuttle from Arima Onsen Station or the bus terminal. Shuttle service may have set hours or require advance notice.

Choose by your day’s constraints
- Kyoto: take the direct coach if a confirmed departure fits your schedule; otherwise use rail and accept the extra changes.
- Itami: the direct coach is usually the simplest route, provided you reserve it and leave enough time after landing.
- KIX: plan for a change in Sannomiya, then choose the Arima coach or the rail connection based on luggage and departure times.
- Kobe Airport: use a through bus only after confirming that the specific departure serves both the airport and Arima.
For a day trip, protect the return departure so a missed coach does not take a large bite out of your bathing time. Check these details before leaving
- The service on your travel date. Kyoto and airport routes have selected departures. Check the operator’s calendar for the day you travel.
- Reservation and ticket rules. Kyoto buses prioritize reservations. Most Itami stop-0 coaches require one, except Shinki Bus services; the airport does not sell tickets.
- Flight-to-bus connection time. Allow time for immigration, baggage claim and the walk to the stop. A scheduled landing is not a realistic bus departure time.
- Luggage and the final walk. Check the bus operator’s baggage rules and ask your accommodation about slopes, pickup points and shuttle reservations.
- Your onward route the next day. The best route into Arima may not be the easiest way out toward Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe or an airport.
