Tosen Goshobo in Arima: A Historic Ryokan with a Half-Mixed Gold-Spring Bath

Tosen Goshobo is an old wooden ryokan in the centre of Arima Onsen, a short walk from the station and the town’s main lanes. Its signature bath, Kinkosen, uses free-flowing gold-spring water. The bathing layout is unusual: the indoor areas are separated by gender, while the semi-open section has a partition that allows companions on either side to talk across it.

You can stay in a standard room and use Kinkosen; an in-room natural spring is limited to specific Shinraku suites. That makes the first booking decision fairly simple: choose a standard room for the public bath, add a private-bath session for one shared soak, or book a Shinraku room if you want gold spring in your own space.

Kinkosen is shared, with a divided semi-open section

The indoor bathing areas are separate for men and women. In the semi-open-air area, a partition keeps the sides distinct, though people bathing with a companion can still see and speak to each other across it. It is not a fully open mixed bath, but it is also not the usual layout where guests on the other side are completely out of sight. Anyone who would find that awkward may prefer the private bath or an in-room suite.

Overnight guests can use Kinkosen from 3 p.m. until 9:30 a.m. the next day, except for cleaning from midnight to 1 a.m. The inn identifies the water as a blend from Gosho and Naki sources, supplied free-flowing. The outlet temperature listed by the inn is about 95°C; that is source temperature, not the temperature of the bath itself.

Yoya Matsukaze is a bookable private gold-spring bath

The private bath Yoya Matsukaze is for guests who want a full room to themselves rather than the divided semi-open area. It uses the same source blend and can be booked for 60 minutes at ¥5,500 or 90 minutes at ¥7,700, for up to four people. Overnight slots run 3 p.m.–midnight, and the inn asks guests to request a time when booking their stay.

For one private soak, a standard room plus Matsukaze may cost less than a suite. An in-room spring is more useful if you expect to bathe several times or do not want to plan around a reservation.

Only two rooms have in-room gold spring

Shinraku 501 “Tou” and 502 “Gu” are both listed at about 130 square metres and have in-room free-flowing gold spring. Room 501 also has a plain-water bath and can accommodate up to four; room 502 pairs the bath with a sauna and accommodates up to five. The regular guest rooms may have a private bathroom, but that alone does not mean the bath uses natural spring water.

The building’s age affects access. Some rooms require stairs, and the inn is not fully barrier-free. Room 501 has an optional accessibility setup, but it does not make every route or facility step-free. Ask about the exact room and bath route if stairs are a concern.

A central address, with old-building quirks

Goshobo is about four to five minutes on foot from Arima Onsen Station. Drivers are directed to the Arimari car park rather than the narrow, busy lane by the inn; staff can help with a transfer when available before 6 p.m. Traditional timber construction also means sound carries more readily than in a modern hotel, so it may be less forgiving for families with children who are active late at night.

Meal and arrival cutoffs depend on the plan. A dinner-inclusive reservation should follow its stated check-in and meal times; a later check-in shown for a room-only plan does not mean dinner will be held. Check-out time also varies by room category, so use the details for the room you select.
