Asama Onsen Day Trip: Hot Plaza Asama, Senki no Yu and Biwanoyu Compared

For a first visit, a late soak or a clearly stated tattoo policy, start with Hot Plaza Asama. Senki no Yu is the ¥400 neighborhood bath, and its 6:30 a.m. opening makes most sense if you are already staying nearby. Biwanoyu asks for a longer walk, but the garden and old bathing grounds are the reason to make it.

One detail needs checking before you set off: Matsumoto’s official tourism listing puts Biwanoyu’s adult admission at ¥900, while the Asama Onsen innkeepers’ association still lists ¥800. Budget for ¥900 and confirm with the bath on the day.

The three baths at a glance

These are three different ways to spend an hour, not a checklist for one short stop. Hot Plaza is easiest to plan around; Senki no Yu is a pre-breakfast option for guests in the district; Biwanoyu is better when you can give the garden some time. One well-chosen bath is enough for most day trips.

Hot Plaza Asama: the easiest all-rounder

Hot Plaza has the most complete visitor information of the three, the latest closing time and the simplest bus access. Admission is ¥750 for adults and ¥400 for elementary- and junior-high students. Children below elementary-school age enter free when accompanied by a guardian. The doors are open from 10 a.m. until midnight, with last entry at 11 p.m.

Tuesday is the regular closing day. If it falls on a public holiday, the facility opens and closes the following day instead. Hot Plaza also says it stays open during New Year, Golden Week and Obon, but check its calendar for the dates you have in mind.

Inside are a large public bath, an outdoor bath, a 90°C dry sauna, a cold plunge and a relaxation area. There is also a source-fed footbath outside. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash are provided; towels and some small items cost extra, so bring your own if you want to keep the visit to the admission price.

Hot Plaza lists a source-water temperature of 49.7°C. Its reported flow rate—815 litres per minute—was measured at a mixing tank rather than one spring source; the facility also says it receives about 26 tonnes of source water a day.

The main baths are diluted and heated for temperature control, then circulated and filtered for hygiene. The footbath is separately described as free-flowing source water. The source-water temperature is not the temperature of the bathing pools.

Hot Plaza explicitly welcomes guests with tattoos. Senki no Yu and Biwanoyu do not state their policies as clearly, so contact either bath before visiting if you need to know whether tattoos are allowed.

Senki no Yu is for an early, inexpensive soak

At ¥400, Senki no Yu is the least expensive of the three. It opens at 6:30 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m., with no fixed weekly closing day. The bath sits just uphill from the Yuzaka bus stop and keeps the feel of a local sento-style communal bath. Staying in Asama Onsen? This is the one that makes a pre-breakfast soak realistic.

Information about the facilities is sparse. The tourism association lists the price, address and hours, and says the bath has been renovated and is easy for visitors to use. It does not provide a current list of amenities, towel prices or bathing supplies. Bring a small towel, a bath towel and any toiletries you rely on; don’t count on sauna or lounge facilities that have not been confirmed.

The same caution applies to the water details. Asama Onsen has area-level figures for alkaline simple springs at around 50°C, but Senki no Yu’s current listing does not identify a specific source or publish its pH, flow rate, pool temperature or water-treatment method. Those neighborhood-wide figures are not a substitute for facility-specific data.

Biwanoyu: come for the garden, allow time for the walk

The published adult price differs between local listings. Matsumoto’s tourism site is the higher, current budget figure; the innkeepers’ association has not yet updated its lower adult amount.

Biwanoyu is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with last entry at 8 p.m. Monday is the regular closing day; when Monday is a public holiday, the closure moves to Tuesday. Matsumoto’s tourism site lists indoor and outdoor baths, a sauna, cold plunge, garden and rest area. The bathing grounds were once used by the lords of Matsumoto Castle.

This is the most atmospheric setting of the three, though that comes with a longer approach: from Asama Onsen Cultural Centre bus stop, allow about 10 minutes on foot. Matsumoto’s listing describes the garden and outdoor bath; it does not publish the same detailed spring-treatment information as Hot Plaza. Don’t apply Hot Plaza’s 49.7°C source reading or its 815-litre flow figure to Biwanoyu.

The official sources reviewed here do not settle Biwanoyu’s tattoo policy. If that affects your choice, ask the facility before visiting. The garden is the reason to make the extra walk; for a quick soak between other plans, Hot Plaza is easier to fit in.

No-car access: bus stops and the walk to each bath

Alpico’s Asama and Shin-Asama routes connect Matsumoto with Asama Onsen. The fare change below took effect on 14 March 2026:

Hot Plaza has its own stop, about a one-minute walk from the entrance; the ride from Matsumoto takes roughly 19 minutes.

These are outbound departure times from the bus terminal, not a guarantee of a convenient return after a late soak. Check both directions on the current timetable before you go.

Biwanoyu is about a 10-minute walk from Asama Onsen Cultural Centre bus stop. That is manageable without luggage, but less appealing with a heavy bag or anyone who would rather avoid the extra walk. Senki no Yu is near Yuzaka bus stop; it makes most sense when you are already staying in the neighborhood, especially for an early visit.

The final choice

Go to Hot Plaza for the most predictable first visit, a sauna, a late soak, clear tattoo permission or the easiest bus stop. Senki no Yu is the budget pick for guests sleeping in Asama Onsen who want to bathe before the day gets going. Choose Biwanoyu when the garden and historic setting are worth the extra walk, and set aside ¥900 until its published prices agree.
