Which Awara Onsen Ryokan Fits Your Trip? Seifuso, Matsuya Sensen and Mimatsu
Compare Seifuso’s garden bath, Matsuya Sensen’s range of bathing spaces and Mimatsu’s architecture. Check live rates for the same dates and meal plan.
Awara’s larger inns are easier to choose when you start with the hours you expect to spend there. Seifuso makes the garden open-air bath part of the stay. Matsuya Sensen gives bath-hopping more variety. Mimatsu’s two main baths, Taiyoden and Meigetsuden, have a more architectural feel. None is automatically the best value: it depends on whether you will use that feature and how much time you have between arrival and dinner.

What each inn does well
| Ryokan | The main draw | Works well when… | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seifuso | A large garden open-air bath and several indoor bathing options | You want dinner and an evening soak in one place | Day visitors cannot use every overnight bath; shuttle service requires a reservation. |
| Matsuya Sensen | Different baths, including open-air tubs and a women’s healing sauna | You want more variety without leaving the inn | Its official site lists bath hours for overnight guests; day-use hours are listed separately by the tourism association and should be confirmed. |
| Mimatsu | The domed Taiyoden bath, Meigetsuden and a courtyard garden | The building and bath setting are part of the reason for your stay | The two baths alternate by gender, and the schedule changes from October 2026. |
There is no verified like-for-like rate comparison here. The final price depends on date, room, meals, taxes and cancellation terms; compare the total for the same number of guests and meal plan before deciding.
A note on the scorecard
The original comparison used seven editorial scores, in the order Seifuso / Matsuya Sensen / Mimatsu. They are retained as a rough reference, not hotel ratings or survey results. No scoring method was published, so treat a one- or two-point difference as a prompt to check your priorities rather than a meaningful ranking.
| Category | Seifuso | Matsuya Sensen | Mimatsu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bathing comfort | 88 | 90 | 86 |
| Variety of baths | 90 | 96 | 84 |
| Cleanliness and upkeep | 85 | 85 | 84 |
| Setting and atmosphere | 92 | 84 | 94 |
| Quiet | 78 | 76 | 86 |
| Access | 82 | 80 | 80 |
| Overall experience | 84 | 83 | 82 |
For a more useful comparison, ask which bath is open at the time you will be there, how far the room is from it, and what transport you will use after check-out. A high score for scenery will not help if you arrive after dark and leave early; a lower access score may matter much less if you have a reserved shuttle.
Match the inn to the day you have
If Tojinbo is the main event on day one, you may appreciate being able to return to Seifuso, eat and unwind without heading back out for a bath. Matsuya Sensen is a better fit if the baths themselves are a major part of the stay. At Mimatsu, the setting may be the draw even on a day when you do not plan to fill every hour with sightseeing.
Room location and timing deserve a quick check, too. A large property can involve more walking between the room, dining area and bath. Guests sensitive to noise may want to ask about rooms near lifts or public spaces; families and older travellers may care more about transfer arrangements and bath access than an extra tub. Reviews can flag questions to ask, but one guest’s room or busy day should not be treated as a guarantee of what your stay will be like.
Seifuso currently offers a free shuttle from JR Awaraonsen Station, but it is reservation-only and runs at listed times. Awara-Yunomachi Station is closer to the hot-spring district. Confirm the route and last connection for your dates before using distance as a deciding factor.
Where day bathing fits
For a late or low-cost soak, Saintpia Awara is the easiest choice. The ryokan baths open later and have shorter visiting windows.
| Bath | Adult admission | Day-use hours | Last entry / booking note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saintpia Awara | ¥600 | 10 a.m.–11 p.m. | 10:30 p.m. last admission |
| Seifuso | ¥1,500 | 4–8 p.m. | Current listing |
| Mimatsu | ¥1,500 | 2–6 p.m. | 5 p.m. last admission |
| Matsuya Sensen | ¥1,500 | 4–7 p.m. | Overnight guests have priority; call ahead |
Those day-use terms do not describe what overnight guests can access. Seifuso excludes Komorebi no Yu from its day-use offer; Mimatsu’s baths alternate by gender and Matsuya Sensen’s overnight bath hours are published separately. If a particular bath is important to you, confirm its schedule for your stay.
