Private Day-Use Onsen in Beppu: Hyotan, Sakura-yu or Mugen no Sato?

For a private open-air bath plus a full public-bath visit, Hyotan Onsen has the broadest setup. Sakura-yu is easier to price if all you want is a private room for an hour. Mugen no Sato Shun-Ka-Shu-To is the hillside choice for a private bath in a wooded setting, but it no longer has a public bath, closes to new arrivals by late afternoon and has no showers or running-water taps in its private baths.

All three offer private rooms, but none of those listings confirms a tattoo exception; ask the facility if you need one. Sakura-yu’s public bath has garden-side outdoor pools, while its room list does not identify which private rooms have outdoor tubs.

Hyotan Onsen: make the bathhouse the outing

Hyotan is in Kannawa, about 25 minutes by bus from Beppu Station and a short walk from the Jigokubaru/Hyotan Onsen stop. It has indoor and open-air public baths, plus 14 private baths with different layouts. The private baths also have their own sauna.

Private-room prices cover up to three adults; additional guests pay separately. Most rooms can be booked by phone one week ahead. A small group of open-air baths is walk-in reservation only, so check the booking method if you have a particular layout in mind.

The published analysis identifies a sodium-chloride spring, with a source temperature of 100.4°C and a flow rate of 500 litres per minute. The analysis dates from February 22, 1994, and its temperature describes the source, not the bathing pool. Hyotan cools the very hot water with a bamboo system but does not publish one fixed pool temperature.

This is the best match if you want a private soak and still expect to use the public baths, waterfall bath or steam bath. It is less compelling if you only want a quiet one-hour private room. Bring or budget for towels and washcloths, which are extra.

Sakura-yu: choose a room, then check its current status

Sakura-yu has 20 private family-bath rooms, each rented for 60 minutes. The current listed room prices range from ¥2,000 to ¥3,000. After each group, staff clean the tub and refill it. Phone reservations are now available, although they are not accepted during major holiday periods; the facility recommends booking by the previous day when possible. The live status page can show rooms under maintenance, so do not assume every one of the 20 is available on arrival.

The public bath has indoor pools and garden-side outdoor pools, with separate sections for men and women. Weekday adult entry is ¥500; the weekend and holiday rate is ¥700. Private-bath photos and names are not a reliable way to determine whether a particular room is open-air. If you need a private outdoor bath specifically, confirm the room directly before paying.

Sakura-yu is near Beppu Interchange, which makes it easier by car. If you are relying on public transport, leave time for the last leg rather than comparing only the bath price.

The listed source is a sodium-magnesium bicarbonate-chloride spring at 47.9°C. That is a source reading, not a published temperature for the private rooms.

The site says it cleans and refills the public pools daily and fully cleans and refills each private bath after a group leaves. Shared-pool hours are 11 a.m.–midnight on weekdays and 10 a.m.–1 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Private-bath final reception is 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends and holidays. Check the live room-status page before travelling, especially on a busy date.

Mugen no Sato: private baths only, in a hillside setting

After reopening on August 8, 2026, Mugen no Sato changed to a private-bath-only facility. It has eight baths and no public bath. Hours are 10 am to 6 pm, with last reception at 4:50 pm; each session is 60 minutes on weekdays and 50 minutes on weekends and holidays. Reservations are not accepted, and guests are assigned a room in arrival order.

The posted rate starts at ¥2,300 for a three-person room and ¥2,800 for a four-person room. Those are room prices, not per-person rates. The pools sit among wooded slopes and streams; the waterfall-side bath is the most distinctive. The water is a simple sulfur spring, but no current source or pool temperature is published for comparison.

The catch is easy to overlook in photos: none of the private baths has a shower or running-water tap. There is also a 15-minute walk from the Horita Onsen bus stop after a roughly 25-minute ride from Beppu Station. Drivers can reach the facility in about five minutes from Beppu Interchange, and parking is available.

Families or guests who need bathing assistance should discuss the exact room in advance. Hyotan lists accessible family-bath options; Sakura-yu lists an accessible room. Mugen no Sato’s missing shower and the walk from the bus stop can make it less practical for some groups.

Hyotan says it can prepare a step, a high bathing chair and a non-slip mat in some private rooms; Sakura-yu identifies an accessible family bath called Ouchozakura. Ask what is available for the specific room and date rather than assuming every private bath has the same equipment.

Tattoo rules are not stated in the visitor information for Hyotan, Sakura-yu or Mugen no Sato. Ask the facility you plan to use; a private room is not a published tattoo exception.
