Fukuchi Onsen Day Trip: Ishidou no Yu Is Closed—Where to Bathe Instead

Ishidou no Yu is closed and Fukuchi’s footbath is for overnight guests; compare public bathing alternatives in Hirayu, Tochio and Shinhotaka.

Checked: September 27, 2026

If you are coming to Fukuchi just to soak, change the plan before setting out. Ishidou no Yu has formally closed, and the Yadoriyu footbath is for overnight guests of Fukuchi Onsen. The village’s ryokan have their own baths, but those are not automatically open to walk-in visitors. For a day trip, treat Fukuchi as a stop between baths—or stay overnight—and choose a separate public bath nearby.

The Fukuchi bath people remember is no longer open

Ishidou no Yu, the former day-use bath at Mukashibanashi no Sato, is listed as closed by the Fukuchi Onsen Tourism Association. Its notice says the operators hope to review the setup and eventually resume business, but gives no reopening date. That is not a current reopening announcement, so old opening hours and admission prices should not be used to plan a visit.

Yadoriyu, a footbath in a relocated 300-year-old farmhouse, reopened on April 6, 2026 after its winter break. It is open from 9 am to 9 pm on irregular closing days, with no parking, and is limited to guests staying in Fukuchi. It is a pleasant extra before check-in or during a village walk, not a replacement for a public bathing facility.

The distinction matters because several Fukuchi inns advertise substantial hot-spring facilities. That does not mean they sell day-use admission. Magokuro, for example, drains and cleans its baths during the day and explicitly does not accept outside bathers. Ask a specific inn directly if you have another property in mind; without a confirmed day-use plan, do not count on its guest bath.

Pick a replacement by what you need

BathBest fitWhat to know before going
Hirayu no MoriA full bathing stop with showers and a place to restAdult admission is ¥700 (about HK$35 / NT$143); open 10 am–9 pm, last entry 8:30 pm. Soap and shampoo are provided.
Hirayu no YuA short, low-cost soak near HirayuSimple outdoor baths, no washing area; expect a contribution of around ¥300 (about HK$15 / NT$61). Hours and winter opening time can vary.
Kojin no YuA riverside open-air bath on the Tochio sideTwo gender-separated outdoor baths and no washing stations. Opens at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for cleaning; allow for that late start.
Shinhotaka no YuA seasonal stop when continuing to ShinhotakaThe 2026 season runs April 18–October 30, 8 am–6 pm. This is a mixed outdoor bath; swimwear or a bathing garment is required. Cleaning is on Mondays and Fridays, and high river water can close it.

Hirayu no Mori is the practical choice when you need a proper wash, are returning through Hirayu or want the least improvised stop. It has indoor and outdoor bathing, washing areas and a lounge. The smaller Hirayu no Yu is for soaking, not a full shower-and-change routine. Kojin no Yu makes more sense if Tochio is already on your route. Shinhotaka no Yu is a seasonal detour, not a reliable year-round fallback.

For any of the smaller outdoor baths, bring a towel and check the current notice before travelling. Their contribution-based admission and limited facilities are part of the setup; do not expect lockers, shower stalls or staff services comparable to a full day spa.

By bus, the route variant matters more than the map distance

Nohi Bus’s Takayama–Hirayu–Shinhotaka line has services via Fukuchi and others via Ipposui. They do not stop in the same places, so check that your chosen bus serves Fukuchi Onsen (HO40).

Example departureListed time
Takayama to HO40 via Fukuchi7 a.m.; arrives 8:10 a.m.
HO40 toward Takayama2:16 p.m.; next listed bus 4:16 p.m.

The operator lists Takayama–Fukuchi at ¥1,800 one way. Check the timetable and fare for your date in both directions; missing the 2:16 bus in this example means a two-hour wait.

Without a car, Fukuchi is a conditional sightseeing stop, not a dependable place to improvise a bathing day. The village has no public walk-in bath at present, and a missed return bus can leave you waiting in a small mountain settlement with few services. If bathing is the main reason for the outing, make Hirayu your anchor and only add Fukuchi when the timetable gives you a workable connection. A ryokan stay changes the equation: the Fukuchi ryokan comparison explains the different in-house bathing setups and booking restrictions.

If a day-use bath is essential, keep a plan B

Check the bath’s own page on the day, especially for seasonal pools. Shinhotaka no Yu closes for winter after October 30, 2026, and can shut temporarily when the river rises. Kojin no Yu opens later on its cleaning days. Hirayu no Mori is less exposed to those particular constraints, though its hours and admission are still subject to change.

Fukuchi remains a good overnight base for its ryokan baths and quiet village setting. It is simply no longer a place where an independent day visitor can count on arriving and finding a public bath open.
