Four Day-Use Baths on Fukui’s Echizen Coast
Isaribi is the easiest seaside stop; Nihonkai opens early, while Michi-no-yu and Nagisa-no-yu are local baths. Check the bus back before a late soak.

“Echizen Onsen” is a name for several spring areas along the coast, not a single bathhouse or shared source. For a coastal day out, the choice is more practical than abstract: do you want an outdoor bath facing the Sea of Japan, an early opening, or an inexpensive indoor soak?
| Bath | Adult admission | Usual hours | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isaribi | ¥520 | 11:00–21:00 | Sunset, outdoor bathing and the roadside station |
| Nihonkai | ¥520 | Weekdays 09:00–20:00; weekends/holidays 07:00–20:00 | An early bath with a sea view |
| Michi-no-yu | ¥410 | 11:00–21:00; last entry 20:30 | A low-cost indoor bath |
| Nagisa-no-yu | ¥410 | 11:00–20:00; last entry 19:30 | A community bath with a coastal outlook |
Isaribi: put it at the end of a coast day
Isaribi sits beside Roadside Station Echizen and the Echizen Crab Museum. Inside are indoor and outdoor baths, a rest hall and changing spaces. The tourism association lists last admission at 20:20.
| Visitor | Public bath | One-hour family bath, per person |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥520 | ¥1,040 |
| School-age child | ¥310 | ¥620 |
| Younger child | ¥200 | ¥410 |
You can reserve the family bath by phone up to a month ahead. Bookings are generally for at least two people, and the charge is per person rather than per room.
One dated notice is especially relevant if your trip is soon: from 30 September through 30 October 2026, Isaribi plans to close its outdoor and family baths for exterior work and operate only the indoor bath. It will close entirely on 7 October, with normal service scheduled to resume on 31 October. Check the operator’s latest notice before travelling, as this work changes what the ¥520 ticket gives you.
Nihonkai: the early start
Nihonkai’s adult rate is also ¥520. It opens at 09:00 on weekdays and 07:00 on weekends and public holidays, then closes at 20:00. The indoor and outdoor baths face the coast; the venue is more focused than Isaribi, without the same nearby cluster of restaurants and attractions.
The operator’s current hours page says it closes Thursdays from March through October, with a different first-and-third-Thursday schedule for November through February. Older tourism listings may show another pattern, so use the operator’s calendar and contact details for your visit date.
Michi-no-yu: a simple local bath
Michi-no-yu is in Dōguchi, by the bus stop. Adults pay ¥410, primary- and junior-high-school pupils ¥200, and children aged three to five ¥100. It is an indoor-only bath, usually open 11:00–21:00 with last entry at 20:30; Wednesday, Thursday and year-end/New Year are listed as regular closures.
This is a good fit if you want to shower and soak without paying extra for a view or sauna. Its hot spring is identified by Echizen Town as the KurIya source, but bath-specific temperature and water-treatment details are not published on the main attraction page.
Nagisa-no-yu: a view from the bath, with two closed days
Nagisa-no-yu is part of the Echizen Community Welfare Center in Umeura. Its indoor bath looks toward the sea.
| Day-use details | Current listing |
|---|---|
| Adult admission | ¥410 |
| School-age children | ¥200 |
| Younger children | ¥100 |
| Hours | 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; last entry 7:30 p.m. |
| Closures | Mondays and Tuesdays (or the following day when a holiday affects the schedule), plus New Year |
The social welfare council lists soap and a hair dryer among the provided items. Shampoo, towels and several other basics are sold, so bring your own if you want to keep the visit simple.
The spring names matter
Echizen Town’s 2024 spring survey groups the coastal baths under three sources: Isaribi and Michi-no-yu use KurIya (Echizen No. 2); Nihonkai is listed with Nanbu (No. 3); Nagisa-no-yu uses Tamagawa (No. 1). That distinction matters because an older technical panel at Nihonkai conflicts with the town’s newer source listing. Avoid carrying one bath’s pH or temperature figures over to another.
Without a car, choose one bath and protect the return trip
The Fukutetsu Takefu–Echizen Coast route serves this stretch, including stops near Nagisa-no-yu, Michi-no-yu and Roadside Station Echizen. It is a useful connection, but service is not frequent enough to improvise after a long soak. Check both directions and the exact stop on the day you travel. “Open until nine” does not mean a bus will still be running after nine.
For a first visit with a car, Isaribi pairs naturally with seafood or the crab museum—except during the dated construction period above. For an early start, look at Nihonkai. If price matters more than outdoor scenery, Michi-no-yu or Nagisa-no-yu costs less. The Mikuni Onsen guide covers the northern end of a Fukui coast itinerary.
Check closure days and tattoo rules before choosing
Nihonkai’s operator lists Thursday closures from March to October, then the first and third Thursdays from November to February; older tourism pages may still show a different schedule. Michi-no-yu generally closes Wednesday and Thursday, while Nagisa-no-yu closes Monday and Tuesday. Those weekday patterns can make the two ¥410 local baths alternate as the more practical choice.
Isaribi and Nihonkai refuse guests with tattoos; neither lists a cover-sticker exception. Michi-no-yu and Nagisa-no-yu give no tattoo guidance, so call those bathhouses before setting out. At Isaribi, the operator says the shared bath is heated, circulated and disinfected. It is not a free-flow bath, even though its water comes from a natural source.
