Kisoya in Gero: What the Tatami Bathhouse and Room Plans Offer

Kisoya’s public bath has tatami washing floors, baby baths and changing-room beds. Room dining is available on selected plans; its rose bath closed in 2025.

Kisoya is best known for tatami flooring in both public bath washing areas. The inn also has indoor and outdoor baths for men and women, baby baths and changing-room beds, and meal plans that may be served in the guest room. One old selling point has gone: the women-only rose bath ended in January 2025, so it should not factor into a 2026 booking.

A practical public bath for families

Each men's and women's bath area has one indoor and one outdoor bath. The guest bathing period is listed as 2pm to 10am the following day. The tatami-style washing floor feels different from a cold tiled bath area, and both changing rooms have a baby bed and baby bath. That can make the logistics easier when bathing with a young child, though it does not mean every route around the building is step-free.

The baths use natural Gero hot spring water, described as an alkaline simple spring. Current lodging information lists a mix of flow-through and recirculation, with dilution and reheating. So “natural onsen” here should not be read as 100% untreated flow-through water.

The rose bath is a common source of outdated information. Kisoya's rose garden could no longer be maintained, and the women-only bath ended on January 31, 2025; the remaining flowers were used through February. Some older tourism listings still mention it, but it is not a current facility.

An open-air room bath is not proof of hot-spring water

Kisoya has three rooms with a private open-air bath. That can be useful for guests who prefer not to use the shared bath or want a more flexible bathing routine. The public material confirms the private tub, but does not establish that those room baths are supplied with natural spring water. If that is essential, ask about the exact room category and water source before booking.

Some plans offer dinner and breakfast in the room. Do not assume this applies to every rate: confirm the meal venue, menu and arrival cutoff in the plan details. Guests expecting to arrive after 5pm should contact the inn about dinner arrangements.

Checkout and local taxes

Published checkout times differ: booking listings commonly show 10am, while the Gero inn association gives noon and a prefectural lodging page describes a possible arrangement for two-meal guests who settle their bill by 10am. Treat 10am as the safe checkout assumption. If using the room until noon matters, ask whether the exact plan includes it before booking.

Gero City charges a bathing tax of ¥150 per person per night, with exemptions for qualifying children. A separate accommodation tax has applied since October 1, 2025: ¥100 per person per night when the accommodation charge before meals is under ¥5,000, and ¥200 at ¥5,000 or more, subject to statutory exemptions. Check the final payment breakdown; booking sites may display local taxes differently.

JR Gero Station is around a 12–15 minute walk away, or about three minutes by taxi. Kisoya offers station pickup, but it is not a fixed, all-day shuttle; tell the inn your arrival time in advance. There is free parking for guests. If anyone would rather not walk with luggage, arrange the transfer before setting out.

If you require a private natural hot spring in the room, confirm that specific feature with the inn before booking. To compare different types of Gero ryokan, start with the accommodation guide.
