Is the Hakone Freepass Worth It? A Route-by-Route Cost Check

The pass is not automatically a bargain just because you are visiting Hakone. At current adult prices, the two-day pass from Shinjuku is ¥7,100 and the three-day pass is ¥7,500. Starting in Odawara, the equivalents are ¥6,000 and ¥6,400. The Limited Express Romancecar is extra, and some routes are outside the pass network.

The useful question is what you will ride, not how many nights you are staying.

What the pass covers

Within its designated sections, one pass covers unlimited rides on the Hakone Tozan Railway, selected Hakone Tozan Bus routes, the cable car, ropeway, sightseeing cruise, selected Odakyu Highway Bus and Tokai Bus routes, and the sightseeing-shuttle buses. The Shinjuku ticket also includes one round trip on the Odakyu Line between your selected departure station and Odawara. The Odawara ticket does not include that rail journey.

There are two common extra costs. First, the Romancecar needs a separate limited-express ticket on top of the pass. Second, the Izu-Hakone Bus is not covered. A Hakone Freepass also does not turn every bus or every section into a free ride: outside the marked area, you pay the extra fare.

Allow for the trip to the hotel, not just the ticket price

From Shinjuku, Hakone-Yumoto takes about 90 minutes to two hours. Gora, Owakudani and Lake Ashi add transfers by mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, bus and boat. Setsugetsuka is about a minute from Gora Station; Hanaori is about two minutes from Togendai Station and the port. A hotel farther up the slope may still require a shuttle or a steep walk.

With a large suitcase, plan where to leave it before choosing your route. Station lockers may be full, and hotel pickup is not included unless the property lists it. Check the last connection and any shuttle schedule alongside the fares.

When it tends to pay off

Odakyu Hakone’s own example is a useful reference point. On its specified two-day route from Shinjuku—Hakone Shrine, a Lake Ashi cruise and Owakudani—the adult pass comes out ¥1,380 cheaper than buying the included transport and listed admissions separately. Its other example, combining the Hakone Open-Air Museum, Owakudani and Gotemba Premium Outlets, shows a ¥1,340 saving from Shinjuku. Those are route-specific examples, not a guarantee for every itinerary.

That kind of loop is where the pass makes sense: several transport modes, multiple stops, and enough time to cross the mountain without rushing. The roughly 70 participating attraction discounts may improve the value, but only count a discount if you were already planning to visit that place.

For a simple Hakone-Yumoto visit, or a day spent mostly at one hotel, the pass may be more ticket than you need. If your plan uses only a couple of local rides, compare those fares directly before buying. For a quick reality check, sketch the route before looking at the savings examples. A Yumoto bath-and-lunch day might use only the trip to Odawara and a few local fares; a day that continues through Gora, Owakudani and Lake Ashi is built around several covered legs. The pass is easier to justify in the second case, but even there the Romancecar, Izu-Hakone Bus, Ashinoko Liner seat and any fare beyond the designated area sit outside the headline price.

Choose the departure station before comparing prices

If you are coming from Tokyo on Odakyu, compare the Shinjuku pass with the train tickets you would otherwise buy to Odawara. The Shinjuku Freepass includes one round trip on the Odakyu Line, but it does not include the Romancecar supplement. The official route examples use ordinary pass coverage and specified transit; they should not be read as including a reserved Romancecar seat.

If you are already in Odawara, or arrive by a service not covered by the pass, the Odawara version is the relevant comparison. It is ¥1,100 less than the Shinjuku two-day pass, but it also omits the Shinjuku–Odawara Odakyu ride. Do not compare the two sticker prices without accounting for how you are getting to Hakone.

The three-day pass is only ¥400 more

At either starting point, the three-day pass currently costs ¥400 more than its two-day counterpart. That is a modest increase if you will genuinely ride the covered network on a third day. It is not a reason by itself to add a night: a slow hotel day with no transport may use little of the extra validity.

One small exception to the “covered ride” assumption is the Ashinoko Liner. It runs on selected weekends and public holidays, requires a seat ticket, and a Freepass holder pays ¥500 per ride for that reservation. Seats are limited; check the operating calendar and booking conditions if you are counting on it.

A quick way to decide

List every planned ride and admission, then check each one against the official Freepass map. Compare the total with the pass price for your departure station and number of days. Leave the Romancecar supplement, uncovered buses and any optional upgrades outside the pass total. If those line items erase the apparent saving, buy individual tickets instead.

Weather can change the arithmetic too. The ropeway or boat may be suspended, and the pass cannot make a closed service run. Check the current transport notices on the day; the Hakone disruption guide explains what to reconsider when a leg is unavailable.
