Hakone in Winter: Ten-yu vs Hotel Indigo for Onsen and Snow

If the point of a Hakone winter stay is soaking outside in the cold air, Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu is the straightforward choice: all 150 rooms have a private outdoor bath supplied with natural spring water. Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora suits a different kind of winter trip. Every room has a natural-spring bath, but not every one is outdoors, and the hotel also has an indoor communal Thermal Spring where guests wear swimwear.

The decision is less about which hotel promises a snowy view. Hakone’s weather varies by area and date, while its mountain roads can become icy. Choose the bath you will want to use on a cold, windy day, then plan the road portion of your arrival around current conditions.

Ten-yu: the room bath is outdoors, whatever the forecast

Ten-yu’s defining feature is consistent across its 150 rooms: each has a private outdoor bath using natural hot-spring water. Its two public baths also have outdoor areas. That makes it an easy fit for travellers who specifically want an open-air soak and are comfortable stepping outside in winter.

Cold air can change how long an outdoor bath feels inviting. Wind, rain or snow may make the trip between the room and the tub less appealing, especially for anyone sensitive to temperature changes. Ten-yu’s outdoor setting is part of the stay, not a weatherproof indoor bathing option. The route to the hotel also has a road leg. You can travel by bus from Hakone-Yumoto or use the Gora shuttle, but neither avoids winter road conditions. All 100 Hotel Indigo guest rooms have a private bath supplied with natural spring water, though outdoor bathing is limited to certain room types. The exact room matters: “private onsen” does not by itself tell you whether the bath is open to the air. Travelling with someone who loves an outdoor soak while another person prefers shelter? Compare the room layouts before paying for a view or a particular category.

The hotel’s shared Thermal Spring is indoors and requires swimwear. It gives guests a communal bathing option without using an exposed outdoor bath, and tattoos are permitted there. Its Odawara shuttle reduces the number of transfers from the main rail hub, but the ride is still by road and takes about 40 minutes in normal conditions. The hotel-to-Odawara service requires advance booking; confirm availability for your date. A pickup from Gora Station can be requested between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The Miyagino Bridge bus stop is about a two-minute walk away, so it offers another route if the shuttle timing does not work. Snow is a bonus, not a room feature

Snowfall is not a reliable booking amenity in Hakone. Conditions can differ between the lower town, Gora and the Lake Ashi area, and a forecast for one part of the region does not promise snow outside your room. Ten-yu and Hotel Indigo both have reasons to choose them even on a clear winter day: Ten-yu centres the stay on a private outdoor bath, while Indigo offers natural spring water in every room plus an indoor shared bath.

Hakone’s mountain roads can be icy in winter, especially early in the morning. Kanagawa Prefecture advises drivers to use winter tires and fit chains where signs require them.
