Hirugami Onsen in Every Season: Flowers, Stars and Snow
Plan Hirugami by season: hanamomo in April, summer stargazing, autumn foliage or winter baths. Check event dates, road and bus access before booking.
Hirugami works best when the trip has one seasonal anchor. Come in spring for the flower-peach trees, in summer for a long evening and a night-sky event, in autumn for mountain color, or in winter to make the hot spring and a warm inn the main plan. The trade-off is practical: Hirugami has no train station, outdoor conditions change quickly in the mountains, and some headline events run only on selected dates.
For a first visit, an overnight stay makes the seasons easier to enjoy. A day trip can work, but it leaves less room for an evening event or a slow morning walk; use the Hirugami day-trip vs. overnight comparison if you are deciding between the two.
Current fall note: as of September 28, 2026, the “Heavenly Paradise” Night Tour is in a maintenance break, scheduled to reopen October 10. The separate Unkai Harbor morning event at Heavens Sonohara is announced for October 31–November 15, 2026. Neither event guarantees clear stars, cloud sea or peak foliage on a given day.
Spring: choose which flower window you are chasing
The blossom season moves through the area rather than arriving everywhere at once. Hirugami Onsen’s own flower-peach trees are generally listed for early to mid-April; the larger Tsukikawa Onsen flower village is usually later, from mid- to late April. Achi’s official forecast and bloom updates are more useful than booking by a fixed annual date.
For scale, Tsukikawa’s 2026 festival was revised to April 14–29 and has finished. The 2027 event dates are not yet confirmed. During the festival, parking and traffic controls are part of the outing, not an afterthought. Hirugami itself has only around 100 public parking spaces; the tourism office recommends staying in the onsen area or using a participating inn’s paid parking rather than assuming there will be an easy roadside stop.
If you have a car, a simple spring day is to walk the trees around Hirugami in the morning, then drive to Tsukikawa only if its current bloom report is promising. Without a car, avoid trying to connect every flower area independently: book the seasonal flower shuttle if it is running, or stay near the blossoms you most want to see. Summer: keep the hot hours quiet and decide on the night tour early
Summer days can be warm, while evenings are when Hirugami’s stargazing events come into their own. Put a riverside or town walk in the morning, leave the hotter part of the day for lunch, a rest and the bath, then travel to the night event only if that date is operating. This gives the outing a natural pause instead of stacking outdoor stops through the afternoon.
The 2026 Night Tour season runs from April 11, 2026, to March 22, 2027, with scheduled closures on May 18–July 17, September 24–October 9, November 16–December 18, and January 12–22. In summer, the uphill gondola runs 5–8 p.m.; guided light-down sessions start later than in spring or fall. Tickets are tied to a date and time and go on sale online two weeks ahead. Poor weather may move the sky talk indoors, while severe conditions can stop the gondola.
Do not plan to soak after the event at a day-use bath without checking its last entry. Night events run later than many public-bathing windows, so an inn with evening bathing or a room bath is the less stressful pairing. Autumn: spend daylight outside, then protect the evening connection
Foliage and night-sky viewing pull the day in opposite directions. Use the brighter hours for a short walk or a drive through the surrounding valleys; return to the inn before dinner and the evening event. As the days shorten, an extra viewpoint is rarely worth arriving late for a reserved gondola slot or an inn’s dinner seating.
For 2026, Unkai Harbor at Heavens Sonohara is scheduled for October 31–November 15. Plan it as an early start; it does not pair well with a late-night tour. Cloud can obscure the view, so keep another plan for the day.

The Night Tour maintenance pause through October 9 means an autumn visit in late September or the first part of October needs a different evening plan. It is due to reopen October 10, then close again November 16 for maintenance. Check the current operating calendar before choosing a date; “autumn season” does not mean every night is available.
Winter: make the bath the plan, not the weather-dependent view
Snow and ice can change the drive, local walks and bus connections. Keep outdoor stops close to the inn, finish them in daylight, and confirm road conditions before setting out. If your main reason to visit is the onsen, winter can still be a good fit; a long rural itinerary with several exposed stops is harder to make dependable.
For winter, the uphill gondola runs 6–7:30 p.m., and the Night Tour ends at 8:30 p.m. The outdoor viewing area is closed; the event uses other zones instead. Maintenance closures in the 2026–27 calendar run November 16–December 18 and January 12–22. Check the event’s same-day status before travelling, since mountain weather can still affect the operation.
Winter also changes the new bus option. The Iida–Nakatsugawa sightseeing bus, which began operating September 1, 2026, is scheduled to run twice daily in each direction at a flat ¥1,500 fare, but it suspends service every year from December 1 through March 19. Its limited departures suit a planned overnight or a transfer between towns better than flexible local sightseeing. Advance booking is available until the day before; same-day boarding is only possible if seats remain.
Transport: work backward from your arrival and departure
There is no rail station at Hirugami Onsen. The main choices are highway buses, inn shuttles for eligible overnight guests, a car, or a combination of these. The new Iida–Nakatsugawa route is useful for a cross-valley trip: it stops at Hirugami Space, links Nakatsugawa and Iida via Magome, and allows a maximum stay of about 27 hours 40 minutes between its published services. It is not a high-frequency local bus, and the winter suspension is important if you are building a cold-season route.
The direct Matsumoto shuttle is a different product. It is for guests staying at participating Hirugami inns, is sold as a round trip, and must be reserved in advance; the tourism office says it can be cancelled if fewer than five people have booked by seven days before departure. Do not assume that a day visitor can use it one way. Confirm the booking conditions with the inn before arranging connecting trains or buses.
For a day trip, check the outbound and return before adding a second stop. For an overnight, make sure the scheduled bus stop matches your accommodation: some outlying properties require a separate taxi from the interchange stop.
