Western Kagawa Day Onsen Guide: Marugame, Sakaide and Kanonji

Choose a day-use bath in western Kagawa by town, natural-spring status, current hours and the extra bus or taxi ride from Marugame, Sakaide or Kanonji.

Western Kagawa’s baths are spread across three different travel patterns. Marugame has a low-cost natural spring near a local bus stop, plus a resort bath that pairs with Reoma World. Sakaide is a choice between an urban spa built around mineral stones and a natural spring on higher ground. Around Kanonji, Kotohiki Kairo is the easiest natural-spring stop by taxi from the station; the cheaper alternatives have shorter hours or sit farther inland.

The JR Yosan Line connects the main towns, but it does not put every bath beside a platform. For a route that includes more than one area, a rental car saves transfers; by rail, choose one town and check the last bus or taxi plan before entering the bath.

The numbers make the geography clearer than a ranking. A ¥600 bath on a hill or beyond town may cost more in travel than a ¥950 bath five minutes from the station by taxi. Pick the town your route already reaches, then decide whether spring water, sauna choice or a long opening window matters most.

Marugame: a city bath or a resort day

Pokapoka Onsen is the most straightforward natural-spring option in Marugame. Its ¥700 adult ticket covers a large selection of baths, including open-air pools, jets, an electric bath, a cool-temperature pool and salt sauna. The operator classifies the source as a weakly alkaline, low-tonicity cold mineral spring. Men’s and women’s bathing sides change daily, so the layout is not tied to a fixed weekday.

The Kotosan route between Marugame and nearby towns stops at Pokapoka Onsen-mae. Service is infrequent, so check the operator’s date-specific timetable in both directions before relying on the bus.

The bath stays open until 1 a.m. and closes on the third Tuesday of each month. If that Tuesday is a public holiday, the closure moves to the fourth Tuesday. Drivers have more flexibility than bus users on the return trip.

The bath reopened on July 1, 2026 after a month-long renovation. A temporary notice fixed the two bathing sides, but the operator says the daily rotation resumed on July 3. Old renovation or rotation notices should not be treated as the current arrangement; check the latest notice if a particular side matters.

Mori no Yu, inside Hotel Reoma no Mori, belongs to a different itinerary. Its bathing ticket also gives access to the indoor heated pool. That changes the value for a family spending the day at Reoma World, but makes little sense as a quick bath between Marugame sights. The day-use window is split around the morning break, and last entry is at 10 p.m.; towels cost ¥330 extra.

Car-free access depends on the date. Reoma publishes free resort shuttles from JR Sakaide, JR Utazu, Kotoden Okada and JR Kotohira on an A/B/C calendar. Seats can fill, and train connections are not guaranteed.

Paid buses also serve the resort. The operator lists a journey of about 40 minutes from Sakaide Station and about an hour from Marugame Station; the Sakaide–Okada route does not run on Sundays or public holidays. Check the calendar for your travel date before planning around one departure.

Sakaide: convenience in town or a spring with a view

Iyashi no Sato Sarai is the urban-area option for a longer spa stop. It has open-air and indoor baths, sauna, cold bath, mineral-stone pools, a relaxation area and optional heated-stone bathing. “Natural stone” describes the materials used in the baths; the operator’s current pages do not publish a spring name or an onsen analysis, so do not choose Sarai on the assumption that it is a natural hot spring.

Current listings put standard adult admission at about ¥1,500. They show opening hours of 10 a.m.–1 a.m., with last entry around midnight. The operator’s searchable pages do not state the single-entry rate in text; confirm it at +81 877-59-2626 if the exact price matters.

Sarai is not beside Sakaide Station. Its access page gives an address and map but no bus directions, so check the town’s current bus locator or take a taxi.

Shiramine Onsen at New Sunpia Sakaide is the stronger pick if the spring itself matters. The hotel lists a sodium-chloride/bicarbonate spring and marks its main public baths as free-flowing. Adult day admission is ¥600; bathing runs 11 a.m.–8 p.m., with last entry at 7 p.m. After 8 p.m., the baths are reserved for overnight guests.

The hilltop location and view over Sakaide come with an extra transfer. The facility’s public pages do not give a current bus schedule, so rail travelers should arrange a taxi both ways. Drivers can fit it into a west-Kagawa loop.

Kanonji: compare by opening window, not just by spring label

For most rail itineraries, Kotohiki Kairo is the easiest natural hot spring to add. It is about five minutes by taxi from Kanonji Station. Its calcium-sodium chloride spring sits alongside a large outdoor bath and an extensive sauna area; the bathing zones alternate by date. The detailed Kotohiki Kairo sauna guide explains which sauna side is open on odd and even dates, so this overview does not repeat the full lineup.

Livemax Resort Kanonji has the shortest bathing window of the three: noon–3 p.m., with guests asked to leave by 4 p.m. It closes on Thursdays while staff replace the bath water. The source is listed as Mogan Onsen’s alkaline simple cold spring at 26.7°C; the operator does not specify whether it flows directly into the bath.

The property reopened under the Livemax Resort name on June 30, 2026, after operating as Kamenoi Hotel Kanonji. Older pages may show its previous name, price or bathing schedule. The official access page gives road directions, not a station shuttle, so plan for a taxi or car.

Hagi-no-yu is the value option when spring classification is not the priority. This public health-and-wellness facility uses softened groundwater, not a natural hot spring. Its facilities include an open-air and herbal bath, salt and far-infrared saunas, a jacuzzi, electric bath and cold bath. It closes on Mondays.

The local tourism association estimates a five-minute taxi ride from Toyohama Station or 12 minutes from Kanonji Station. Those short taxi legs can make it easier to pair with the JR line than a drive into the hills.

Kanonji city includes Kyoraku-yu, a traditional neighborhood sento, in its 2026 community-bath program. That confirms it remains in the city’s current facilities, but the program is for residents and does not publish visitor hours or the door price.

Prefectural price cap for general public bathsMaximum adult price
Through September 30, 2026¥450
From October 1, 2026¥500

The cap is not a confirmed Kyoraku-yu admission price. Check locally before building it into a fixed itinerary.

Two older listings also need to stay out of a current itinerary: Natural Onsen A Qua closed in 2022, while the former Kamei Hotel Kanonji reopened under the Livemax Resort name on June 30, 2026. The new brand is operating; the old name and its archived rates are not current visitor information.

A practical way to route the baths

  • Rail trip with a limited evening: Stay on the Kanonji side and use Kotohiki Kairo if a short taxi ride fits the budget.
  • Toyohama already on the route: Hagi-no-yu can work when you are near Toyohama Station or have a taxi arranged.
  • Driving from Marugame toward Sakaide: Pokapoka has a broad bath-and-sauna menu and late hours. Add Shiramine only if its hilltop detour and earlier last entry fit.
  • Reoma World day: Mori no Yu works as the resort-day finish. Check the shuttle calendar and return leg before entering the baths.
  • Cheapest natural-spring admission: Shiramine and Livemax both list ¥600 adult entry. Shiramine stays open longer; Livemax is an afternoon-only hotel bath and closes Thursdays.

If you are continuing east toward Kotohira, the Kotohira day-use onsen guide covers its shorter inn-bath windows and station access.

For baths closer to the prefectural capital, compare the Takamatsu sento and onsen guide or the Shionoe day-onsen guide; both are more useful if your route is moving east rather than following the coast west.
