Sento and Onsen in Takamatsu: How to Choose a Bath

In Takamatsu, neighbourhood sento suit a quick soak; natural hot springs offer longer bathing. Check current access and Kagawa’s upcoming sento price change.

In Takamatsu, a neighbourhood sento and a natural hot-spring complex can both make for a good bath, but they are different outings. A sento is the simpler choice when you want a short stop near where you are staying. Go to a dedicated onsen if the spring water, outdoor pools, sauna or a longer stay is part of the plan.

The names can blur that distinction. A bathhouse with “onsen” in its name is not, by that fact alone, proof of a natural spring. Look for a published spring classification or source analysis before treating it as one.

For a quick local bath: start with the sento nearest your day

Three traditional public baths in Takamatsu were named among the Kagawa public-bath association’s participating baths in its July 2026 seasonal event: Yoshino-yu in Jōtōchō, Ebisu-yu in Ōgimachi, and Qua Onsen Yashima in Takamatsu-chō. The event listing confirms that they were operating participants at that time; it is not a year-round timetable, so check directly for current hours, closure days and facilities before making a special trip.

Yoshino-yu is in Jōtōchō, Ebisu-yu in Ōgimachi, and Qua Onsen Yashima in Takamatsu-chō. They sit in different parts of the city, so choose based on the neighborhood you are already visiting rather than trying to cover all three in one outing. Their appeal is a straightforward local bath, not a verified comparison of spring chemistry.

Kagawa’s adult price ceiling for a standard public bath is ¥450 through September 30, 2026.

The prefecture has announced a revised ceiling of ¥500 from October 1, with lower age bands also changing.

This is a maximum regulated price for a general public bath, not a promise that every facility charges that exact amount or includes extras such as towels. Check the bath’s own current price before setting off.

When you want a natural hot spring

For a natural-spring visit, compare Busshozan, Pokapoka and Kirara:

  • Busshozan Onsen Tenpyu-yu publishes a sodium bicarbonate–chloride classification and says every bath is flow-through. It is about a ten-minute walk from Kotoden Busshozan Station.
  • Takamatsu Pokapoka Onsen has a natural spring bath, artificial carbonated baths, a sauna and a bedrock-bathing area. The operator lists a bus from Fushiko Station.
  • Natural Hot Spring Kirara opens at 6 a.m. and is about a ten-minute walk from Kotoden Kūkō-dōri Station. On the third Tuesday of each month, bathing starts at 5 p.m.

Those are better fits for someone who wants the spring or facility experience to be the destination. The city sento are easier to fold into a night in central Takamatsu, but they are not interchangeable with a natural onsen ticket.

A note on “onsen” in a facility name

Qua Onsen Yashima’s water classification is unconfirmed. Ask the operator whether it uses a natural spring if that distinction matters to you.

For the terminology behind those labels, see how to tell a sento, onsen and super sento apart. If your main question is which natural hot spring suits your schedule, use the Takamatsu natural-onsen comparison instead of judging all six baths by one price or one feature.
