Kamisuwa Onsen Itinerary by Train: A Short Stop or a Half Day
Plan a Kamisuwa stop between trains: walk to Katakurakan for a few hours or allow half a day for Suwakko Land and its infrequent bus.
Choose your return train before choosing the bath. Katakurakan is an eight-minute walk from Kamisuwa Station, which makes it workable for a short rail stop. Suwakko Land sits about 3 km away; its bus and taxi trips take around 15 minutes, but direct bus departures are limited. It makes sense when swimming or a longer rest is part of the visit, not when you only want a quick soak.

If you have 2½–3 hours between trains: walk to Katakurakan
This is the simpler choice for a rail connection. The walk is short enough that you do not need to coordinate a local bus, and the main bath is inside a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.

Katakurakan’s standard bathing hours start at 10 a.m.; on weekends and public holidays, it opens at 9:30 a.m. Last admission is 7:30 p.m. If your arrival puts the visit close to closing time, check the facility’s notices before setting out. If you have most of the afternoon: make Suwakko Land the destination
Suwakko Land earns the extra travel time when your group plans to swim, use the bath and stay awhile. Its basic admission covers the bath and pools, so it works better as a shared activity than as a quick stop on the way to another train.
First, look up a direct bus that gets you there after the facility opens, then find a return departure before committing. The current city timetable lists only a handful of direct trips; the journey itself is about 15 minutes, but a missed bus can cost far more time than that. A taxi is an easier fallback when the bus times do not fit. The city lists a one-way adult bus fare of ¥150, though fare detail is best checked alongside the latest route information.
Allow roughly three to four hours on site if swimming is part of the plan. That leaves room to change, use the pools, take a bath and rest without trying to fit every facility into a rushed visit. If you want only the hot spring bath, Katakurakan will usually give you more time back for the lakefront or the rest of Suwa.
Suwakko Land is open 10 a.m.–10 p.m. and normally closes on Thursdays. The indoor pool closes earlier than the baths, and the outdoor pool is seasonal, generally from mid-June to early September. Check the facility’s current operating information and the bus timetable for your day. On the August 15 Lake Suwa fireworks day and the Suwa Lake Marathon day, the city says all buses are suspended; a bus-based plan will not work then.
If you have only a short transfer: stay at the station
For a 20–30-minute wait, Kamisuwa Station’s platform footbath is the low-commitment option. It is listed as open 9 a.m.–9 p.m.; a JR ticket or station admission ticket is required. You can warm your feet and still be close to your platform, without changing clothes or watching the clock for a bathhouse return trip.
Leave the second bath for another visit
Trying to fit both Katakurakan and Suwakko Land between trains turns the day into a transport exercise. They serve different kinds of visits: the first pairs naturally with a short walk by the lake, while the second rewards a longer stay and advance planning for the return journey. Pick one and keep the rest of the schedule flexible.

Suwakko Land’s basic ticket covers the bath and pools. The lower evening rate leaves less time to swim, and the return bus still needs checking. Totals above exclude food and travel.
Ryokan day-use baths can be a backup, but reception may depend on occupancy or that day’s operation. Call before setting out and ask about visitor admission, hours, towels and meals. If you want a plan with fewer moving parts, use a facility with published public hours as your main stop and treat a ryokan bath as an alternative only after confirmation.
