Karurusu Onsen Day Trip: Three Quiet Baths Beyond Noboribetsu
Compare three Karurusu day baths by price and setting beyond Noboribetsu. Check Suzuki Ryokan’s walk-in rate before making the mountain trip.
Most first-time visitors to Noboribetsu stay near the main hot-spring street. Karurusu is a separate stop up the valley, with no big shopping strip to wander between baths. Go for a quieter soak, not for the busy town atmosphere around Jigokudani. The local tourism association currently lists three ryokan that accept day bathers.

The area’s water is classified as a simple hot spring. Sanseikan publishes a regional profile of pH 7.2, a clear, odourless spring and a source temperature of 52°C. That source temperature is not the temperature of the bathing pools. Do not assume that each inn’s tubs feel identical or use exactly the same plumbing just because they share the Karurusu name.
Choose by the bath, not the ¥100 difference

Orofure-so fits a longer spa-style stop. Choose Sanseikan for the wooded outdoor bath, or Suzuki for its traditional pools. Suzuki’s current homepage does not show a walk-in price, and third-party bookable plans differ; call the inn if the exact charge matters.
Getting there is the main planning decision
Karurusu lies about 8 km beyond Noboribetsu Onsen. The inns are spread along the same small valley, so you can visit more than one by car, but it is not a pedestrian bath-hopping street.
The regular Dōnan Bus service links JR Noboribetsu Station with the main hot-spring district, not the three Karurusu inns. Without a car, reach Noboribetsu Onsen first and arrange a taxi for the final leg. Confirm the fare and return pickup before boarding; that ride can cost more than the bath itself. Drivers have more flexibility, and the inns list on-site parking. In winter, allow extra time for the mountain road and check weather advisories before leaving the main resort area. For a first visit, keep the main Noboribetsu hot-spring district and Karurusu as separate stops: the former has the sightseeing street and Jigokudani, while this valley is a quieter detour for bathing.
Confirm the day-use window before you leave
The tourism association gives regular hours and prices, but a ryokan can pause day bathing for private use, maintenance or a busy overnight schedule. Suzuki Ryokan, for example, posted a temporary day-use closure for July 21–23, 2026, because the inn was reserved for private use. Those dates have passed, but the notice is a useful reminder that a published weekly schedule is not a guarantee for a particular date. Check each facility’s current notice or call, especially if you are travelling out from Noboribetsu Onsen by bus.
