Umaji Onsen Day Trip: Is the Mountain Detour Worth It?
Umaji Onsen has a ¥600 river-view bath and a private family bath at the same per-person rate. Buses from Aki are infrequent, so check the return first.
Umaji Onsen makes the most sense as part of a visit to Umaji Village, not as a quick soak from central Kochi. The adult day-use fee is ¥600, the bath looks toward the Yasuda River, and a 30-minute private family bath costs the same per person as the public bath. By road, the village is roughly two hours from Kochi City. By public transport, you need a train or bus to Aki, then a low-frequency local bus into the mountains; choose the return service before deciding how long to stay.
The bath and the family room share one per-person price
Day visitors pay ¥600 for adults and ¥300 for children aged three through elementary school. The facility lists a 30-minute private family bath at the same per-person rate. For two adults, that means ¥1,200 total rather than a separate room surcharge. The operator does not publish the room’s capacity, reservation method or same-day availability, so call ahead if the private bath is the reason for the trip.
The bath is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is part of a small riverside inn and community center, with a restaurant on site. The public bath faces the Yasuda River and the surrounding hills. The currently published spring classification is sodium bicarbonate-chloride; the available facility pages do not provide a current full analysis showing source temperature, pH, flow rate or treatment for each tub. Those figures should not be filled in from older third-party pages.
This is a simple village bath, not a multi-pool spa. If the goal is to move between saunas, cold plunges and several themed baths, Umaji is the wrong product. Its appeal is a low-cost soak beside the river, with a private option that can help families or companions who do not want to share a public bathing area.
A car turns the village into a half-day stop
From Kochi City, the operator estimates about 51 km and 1 hour 20 minutes to Yasuda by National Route 55, then another 20 km and around 30 minutes on Prefectural Route 12 to Umaji. The last section is a winding mountain road. From Aki, allow roughly 50 minutes by bus to Umaji; from the village, the same route continues toward Yanase.
The local bus runs only a few times a day. Its timetable was revised on March 22, 2026, and the operator’s access page tells visitors to check the connection at Aki.
An arrival in the village does not guarantee a useful return after a long bath. Check the exact date’s outbound and return services, then work backward from the final bus. If that leaves too little time, stay overnight or arrange a car; the bath’s 9 p.m. closing time does not determine the transport schedule.
Driving is the more flexible option for a bath-only visit. For travelers already heading toward Aki, Kitagawa or Cape Muroto, Umaji can be a natural inland detour. From Kochi City, though, making the round trip solely for an inexpensive soak is a long way to go. The outing earns more time if you also want the village’s forest railway, incline railway, river scenery or local citrus products.
What to confirm before leaving Aki
Umaji Onsen lists irregular closing days, so check the facility’s current notice or call before setting out. Ask about the private family bath separately; the posted price alone does not confirm that it will be available when you arrive. For bus users, verify the Aki connection and the last departure from Umaji on the same day. The operator lists a restaurant, but its order cutoff is earlier than the bath’s closing time, so do not assume a late soak comes with a late meal.
Travelers who want a lower-friction soak near the prefectural capital can compare the Kochi City onsen and sento guide. Umaji offers a different setting, but that mountain-road and bus journey is part of the price of getting there.
