Yulax in Kumamoto: Three Saunas, an Overnight Option and a 171 cm Plunge
Plan a Yulax visit in Kumamoto around its three saunas, 171 cm MAD MAX plunge, overnight rules, ticket options and access from Heisei Station.
Summary: Yulax is a destination for people who want sauna time to be the main event. Its three sauna styles and deep groundwater plunge are the draw; the building stays open around the clock, but the baths close for cleaning from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.

Yulax is a good match for a traveller who is happy to build an evening around bathing and sauna. The operator describes three different sauna rooms on both sides of the bath, followed by a deep cold-water pool supplied with groundwater. There is also a restaurant and a second-floor rest area for guests who choose the longer-stay ticket.
Three rooms, three different rhythms
The Classic Sauna runs scheduled aufguss sessions from noon until 1:00 a.m., generally on the hour. The Meditation Sauna is dim and quieter by design, with self-löyly. The third room, Da Aso Great Eruption, uses steam generated by hot-spring water under the floor. It can become very steamy, so enter slowly if you are new to this style.
The much-discussed cold plunge is 171 cm deep on the men’s side. It is not a pool to dive into casually: use the handholds, enter carefully and skip it if you are unsteady, dizzy or uncomfortable in deep water. The facility’s own description says the plunge is continually replenished with groundwater; that is separate from the hot-spring water.
A 24-hour building, with a two-hour bathing pause
Yulax is open 24 hours, but the baths and sauna are not. Bathing hours run from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. the next day, followed by cleaning from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. A very early arrival can therefore mean waiting rather than bathing.
The one-floor bath-only ticket is ¥900 on weekdays and ¥1,000 on weekends and holidays. It includes the bath and sauna, but not towels; the operator lists cash as the payment method for this ticket.
The longer Free Course includes towels, facility wear, restaurant use and the second-floor paid area. Staying between 1:00 and 5:00 a.m. adds a late-night charge. Rates may change for Golden Week and year-end holidays, so check the live price page.
The building itself is close to JR Heisei Station, about a five-minute walk, and the bus stop at Seyo-cho is also nearby. After a late session, check the first train or bus before choosing to stay overnight. The dormitory is a separate paid option.
How the reviews line up with the practical details
Jalan guests often praise the baths, sauna and cold plunge. Other reviews mention noisy shared areas or feel the value has slipped as prices have risen. These are individual impressions; expect a busy shared facility rather than a quiet private spa.
The operator’s 2026 interview says younger visitors make up the main customer group, while middle-aged and older guests account for roughly 10–20 percent. That describes the audience, not how crowded a particular visit will be.
For a cheaper, shorter city sauna visit, Daifuku-yu has a different feel and a much lower entry cost; see the Daifuku-yu guide. If timing is the priority, the early and late bathing guide compares Yulax with other city options.
