Sento in Central Kyoto: Choose by Neighborhood and Closing Time
Compare 19 sento listings in Nakagyo and Kamigyo by neighborhood and closing time. One is temporarily closed; check each bath’s weekly day off.
“Central Kyoto” covers too much ground for one bath recommendation. If you are around Karasuma Oike, Hatsune-yu keeps you in the neighborhood; near Nijo Castle, Yayoi-yu opens earlier, while Kanayama-yu stays open until 1 a.m. Around Kitano and Enmachi, Minamoto-yu is another late option, and Yamashiro Onsen opens on weekend and public-holiday mornings. Kyoto Tamano-yu is closed for rebuilding, so do not plan around its old hours.
The Kyoto Sento Association lists 11 baths in Nakagyo Ward and eight in Kamigyo Ward. Browse the full 82-bath directory, or use the selections below to find a bath near your plans in central Kyoto.
Start with where you will finish
| Your area | A practical first choice | Check before setting out |
|---|---|---|
| Karasuma Oike or Kyoto City Hall | Hatsune-yu | Closed Saturdays and the last Friday of each month; listed 3 p.m.–midnight. |
| Nijo Castle or Sanjo | Tron Onsen Inari-yu | Usually 4–11 p.m.; Saturday from 3:30 p.m., Sunday from 9:30 a.m.; closed Friday. |
| Mibu or Saiin | Yayoi-yu for an earlier soak; Kanayama-yu for a late one | Yayoi-yu: 1 p.m.–midnight, closed Tuesday. Kanayama-yu: 2 p.m.–1 a.m., closed Saturday. |
| Nishijin or the west side of Kyoto Imperial Palace | Choja-yu or Gosangen-yu | Choja-yu runs until midnight and closes Tuesday. Gosangen-yu opens only Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, until 10 p.m. |
| Kitano or Enmachi | Minamoto-yu or Yamashiro Onsen | Minamoto-yu closes Tuesday; Yamashiro Onsen has no regular closing day in the current Japanese listing and opens at 8 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. |
The point is to avoid a cross-city detour for a small difference in facilities. A bath near your last stop is usually the better choice than one that sends you back toward the center afterward.
If your afternoon ends early
Yayoi-yu in Mibu opens at 1 p.m. and closes at midnight; Kanayama-yu opens at 2 p.m. and closes at 1 a.m. Those are useful when a Nijo-area visit ends before most neighborhood baths open. Nagaike-yu is another Nijo option, but its 3:30–10 p.m. window makes it a poor fit for a late dinner.
For a Sunday morning, Tron Onsen Inari-yu opens at 9:30 a.m. Its name refers to an artificial Tron bath, not a naturally occurring hot spring. The distinction matters if you are looking specifically for a legally classified natural onsen; see the Kyoto sento and natural-onsen guide.
Late bathing around Mibu and Kitano
Kanayama-yu is listed until 1 a.m. and Minamoto-yu has the same closing time. They serve different neighborhoods, so the late hour is useful only if the return route works for you. Leave enough time to wash, change and get back to your train or accommodation; the posted closing time is not a relaxed arrival target.
Yamashiro Onsen is also listed until 1 a.m. and has an outdoor bath and sauna. Its current Japanese listing gives morning hours from 8 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, with no regular closing day. Older translated listings still show a Thursday closure and Sunday-only morning opening. Use the current Japanese listing and check the bathhouse’s notice if your visit depends on a specific day.
Kyoto Tamano-yu is not an available option
Kyoto Tamano-yu stopped operating at its old building on June 20, 2026 and began rebuilding the following day. Kyoto City gives July 2027 as the expected reopening month, not a confirmed date. Its former hours and facilities remain visible in some directories, but they are historical information. Check Kyoto City’s rebuilding update before using older listings.
Admission and the final check
The association’s current standard adult charge is ¥550. Towels, soap, shampoo and sauna extras depend on the individual bathhouse. Kyoto also has a temporary free-bathing program for children up to elementary-school age through March 31, 2027. It requires an accompanying adult aged 18 or older, QR registration and a participating bathhouse; check the official bathing guide and Kyoto Prefecture program page before relying on it.
For another central-area option after midnight, compare the Kyoto late-night sento guide. For hours, weekly closures and sudden notices, use the association’s Nakagyo listings and Kamigyo listings; the Japanese pages are currently more reliable than older translations.
