Sento in Uji, Joyo and Muko: Five Baths Outside Central Kyoto

Compare five sento in Uji, Joyo and Muko by hours, closing days and facilities. These neighborhood baths work best when your plans already take you nearby.

If you are staying in central Kyoto after visiting Byodo-in or the Uji River, it usually makes more sense to return to the city than to detour to a neighborhood bath on the way. These five sento are spread across three towns. They are useful when your accommodation, evening plans or return route already puts you nearby.

Where you will beBath to considerCurrent hoursWhat matters

The Kyoto Public Bath Association’s current Japanese entries are the basis for the hours above. Some translated pages show old times. The listed closing time is not necessarily the last admission time, so do not plan to arrive just before it.

Uji has three baths, but they are not interchangeable

Sakura-yu in Ogura

Sakura-yu is at 21-87 Ogura-cho Minamiura. Its association listing shows a main pool, jet and electric baths, a cold bath, medicinal bath and sauna. It also lists towel rental and sales, soap and shampoo for sale, and two parking spaces.

The current Japanese listing says 3–10 p.m., closed Monday and the second and fourth Friday. An older English entry omits the twice-monthly Friday closure and shows a later closing time; use the current Japanese schedule when planning.

Shinmei-yu in Shinmei

Shinmei-yu is at 97-2 Shinmei Miyahigashi. The association lists an outdoor bath as well as a sauna, cold bath, jet and electric pools. That makes it the clearest choice in Uji if an outdoor bath is important. The operator listing does not identify this as a natural hot spring, so “outdoor bath” should not be expanded into “open-air onsen.”

The current Japanese listing gives 3:30–10 p.m., closed Tuesday. Some older translated pages show 10:45 p.m. as the closing time; do not rely on that older entry.

Taisei Onsen in Okubo

Taisei Onsen is at 40-4 Okubo-cho Minaminoguchi. Despite “Onsen” in its name, the association page lists a neighborhood sento and does not publish a natural-spring analysis. It has a sauna, cold bath and medicinal bath, and the current Japanese page lists no parking spaces.

Its current hours are 3–10:30 p.m., with Wednesday as the regular closing day. The older English listing still shows 11 p.m.; for a late visit, follow the newer Japanese schedule and leave a margin.

Joyo: Ume-yu is the only listed sento

Ume-yu is at 48-1 Terada Kaitogo, about 300 metres from JR Joyo Station and 600 metres from Kintetsu Terada Station. The association describes it as Joyo’s only public bath and lists 12 parking spaces. Its hours are 3:30–10:30 p.m., with Friday as the regular closing day.

There is a sauna, but the current listing explicitly says it is for men only. If a woman in your party considers sauna access essential, Ume-yu will not meet that need; the regular baths remain an option. Towels, soap and shampoo are listed for sale, not as included amenities.

Muko: Katsuyama-yu closes latest of the five

Katsuyama-yu is at 16 Terado-cho Nakanodan, Muko City. The association lists hours of 3:30–11 p.m., closed Tuesday, with parking for 18 vehicles. It has a sauna, cold bath, medicinal bath, jet and electric pools, plus towel rental and toiletries for sale.

That later close helps when your hotel or evening plans are already near Muko, Higashi-Muko or the western edge of Kyoto. It is not a reason to travel from Uji just to extend the bathing window by half an hour.

Use the standard rate as a floor, not an all-in price

Kyoto’s regulated adult public-bath admission is ¥550. Towels and other supplies can cost extra; the association marks towel rental at some of these baths and sales at others. A feature tag does not tell you the rental price or whether a towel is included.

None of these listings gives enough detail to promise tattoo admission. Ask the individual bathhouse if that affects your decision. Likewise, a facility name or a medicinal bath does not establish a legal natural hot spring.

If you are still in central Kyoto, start with the Kyoto sento directory or the Kyoto Station sento guide before adding a journey to these outlying towns.
