Matsushiro Day-Use Onsen: Matsushiro-so, Ichiyokan or Makiba no Yu?

Three day-use baths serve different kinds of visit around Matsushiro. Matsushiro-so sits close to the highway interchange and works well after the town’s historic sites. Ichiyokan is for visitors specifically interested in its iron-rich water and mixed outdoor bath. Makiba no Yu is farther out in the hills, with a view over Nagano and a more convenient setup for drivers than for transit users.

These are the fees and schedules posted by the facilities or Nagano’s official tourism bureau when checked. Makiba no Yu’s own website currently serves unrelated content rather than bath information; the tourism bureau’s visitor listing is the usable source for its hours and rate. Call the facility before travelling rather than assuming those details have not changed.
Matsushiro-so is the low-friction option
The public bathing area has indoor and outdoor baths for men and women. The inn provides shampoo, rinse-in shampoo, body wash and hair dryers.

The water’s iron content turns it golden after contact with oxygen. Matsushiro-so describes its baths as 100% source-fed, with no heating, added water or recirculating filtration. The published flow rate is about 740 litres per minute. This is a different spring from the one at Makiba no Yu, despite the two baths both being in Matsushiro.
For transport, the inn says Nagano IC is about five minutes away by car. From Nagano Station, its access guide points visitors to a bus to Matsushiro Station and then a taxi; check the current timetable before relying on that connection. Ordinary lunch service at Matsushiro-so ended in June 2026, so eat in town first if you want lunch with your bath.
Ichiyokan is worth choosing for the experience, not the ¥200 saving
Nagano’s official visitor listing gives Ichiyokan an adult rate of ¥500, opening hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with last entry at 7, and Tuesday closure. There is an indoor bath and a large mixed-gender outdoor bath. If you are not comfortable with mixed bathing, that outdoor pool should not be the reason for your visit.
The listing identifies its water as an iron-, sodium- and calcium-chloride spring, but does not provide a current individual source temperature, pH, flow rate or full treatment breakdown. I have left those figures out rather than reuse old visitor reports. Bring your own towels and toiletries unless you confirm rental supplies with the bath.
Makiba no Yu is better suited to drivers
Nagano’s official tourism bureau describes Makiba no Yu as a day-use bath on high ground, with a view over Nagano City and the Chikuma River. It lists a dining room and a 100-car parking area. The same visitor listing gives weekday hours of 10 a.m.–9 p.m., weekends and holidays to 9:30 p.m., and Monday–Tuesday closures unless a holiday changes the schedule.
This is a separate Omuro Onsen source, not Matsushiro-so’s. Older operator figures list 40.4°C, pH 7.96 and a flow rate of at least 380 litres per minute; current values are unconfirmed.
Nagano Station is about 18 minutes away by car according to the operator’s access page. Public transport involves a bus toward Matsushiro, a transfer to a Nagaden bus, then a short walk. Check the day’s timetable before choosing it for a car-free trip.
If you are combining a bath with Matsushiro Castle, the Sanada Treasures Museum or the former school, finish lunch in town before heading to Matsushiro-so. Makiba no Yu’s tourism listing currently shows dining service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but confirm before setting your schedule.
