Teiregi no Yu or Gongen Onsen? A Matsuyama Day-Trip Comparison
Compare Teiregi no Yu’s larger bath and sauna lineup with Gongen Onsen’s simpler local soak. Both suit car trips; Teiregi opens at 6 a.m., Gongen at 10.
If you have a car and want a hot spring outside central Matsuyama, compare Minami Dogo Onsen Teiregi no Yu with Gongen Onsen. Teiregi is a large day-use bathing complex with several bath types and a substantial sauna offering. Gongen is attached to a traditional hot-spring inn and keeps the visit more focused on bathing. Neither is a convenient walk from Matsuyama Station.

Teiregi has more to do between baths
Teiregi draws from a source 1,200 metres underground. The operator describes it as a free-flowing source; Ehime’s official tourism site specifically identifies the outdoor Golden Bath as source-fed. That detail applies to the Golden Bath, not automatically to every tub on the property.
The facility’s current prices are ¥680 on weekdays and ¥790 on weekends and public holidays. It opens at 6 a.m. and lists a last-entry time of 11 p.m. The regular schedule says it is open year-round, though temporary maintenance closures can still happen. Check the calendar before driving over.
There are several bathing options, including indoor and outdoor baths, a walking bath, a sauna and a cold plunge. The operator also advertises a separate outdoor tent-sauna area, so check its current booking and admission terms if that is the reason for your visit.
Free parking for 150 vehicles makes Teiregi easy to add after a visit to Tobe Zoo, Ehime Prefectural Sports Park or Children’s Castle, each about ten minutes away by car according to the facility. It also permits overnight parking for cars and campervans after registering your contact details and licence plate at reception; confirm the current arrangements before relying on it.
Gongen is a straightforward local bath
Gongen Onsen sits in a quieter rural setting north of central Matsuyama. Its bathhouse has jet, bubble and herbal baths, plus a sauna. The Ehime tourism listing describes the spring as an alkaline simple hot spring. The operator’s current page gives bathing hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with last entry at 9:30 p.m.; the official tourism listing notes closure on the fourth Thursday of each month.
Admission is ¥700 for adults and ¥300 for children under junior-high age, according to Ehime’s official visitor information. Soap and shampoo are not supplied in the bathing area, though the inn sells them at reception. Bring your own or budget for the counter.
Gongen works well if your drive takes you through Horie or the northern side of Matsuyama. JR Horie Station is about ten minutes away by car, and the property has 70 free parking spaces. It is also near the 52nd and 53rd temples on the Shikoku pilgrimage route. From the Matsuyama expressway interchange, the drive is about 35 minutes, so it is a longer detour from the city centre than the station figure might suggest.
Which one fits your day?
Choose Teiregi if you want an early start, more bathing variety or a longer sauna visit. It also pairs naturally with the attractions south of Matsuyama. Gongen makes more sense for a simple soak on a northern Matsuyama drive or between pilgrimage stops; check the monthly closing day, and bring washing supplies.
If you are staying near Matsuyama Station without a car, these two are awkward choices. The Matsuyama city onsen and sento guide covers baths with more practical city access. For more sauna-focused options, see the Matsuyama natural onsen and sauna comparison.
